📯PUBLICATION NEWS📯 Very stoked to share this special issue that I co-edited with the world, full of great reflections on the theme of 'Meta' applied to various #GameStudies contexts. A link to the full issue is here, but let's dig in to each of the pieces, shall we? dl.acm.org/toc/games/20...

I just found out that Texas is looking into banning, even criminalizing, role-playing games -- as part of attacking furries in schools. www.rascal.news/texas-furrie...

"We have car-shaped candy, fruit candy, and abstract candy." #academicthuglife

New publication! I have written the "Role-playing games" entry in the new Elgar Encyclopedia of Queer Studies. There it sits, between Religion and Rural identities. www.e-elgar.com/shop/gbp/elg...

The 21st annual Tampere Game Research Lab Spring Seminar is just around the corner. The theme this year is Arts and Games. Registration to the event is open. The event is free, but we have limited space, so sign up now. springseminar.org/2025/03/10/r... Hope to see you in Tampere!

Okay, after careful examination during the weekend, I can report that Hedwig and the Angry Inch remains the best film of all time.

The thing which is bugging me about this is foregrounding a scientific defence against "Empathy is bad" rather than noting that a society that values Empathy is the only society worth living in and the only one worth fighting for.

Party Studies, here we come! Last year Leland Masek and I published a paper that was a call to create party studies as a subfield of game studies. As the next step, we are editing a special issue on the topic for Eludamos. Join party studies, you know you want to! CFP: eludamos.org/index.php/el...

A clip from a piece by Adam James and Brody Condon, Procrustean Bed, just dropped! vimeo.com/1023255211/8... A larp was a part of the creation of this, and I got to be a part. It is always interesting to compare the experience and the visual art based on it.

Did you complete your thesis on game studies last year in Finland? Was it any good? Submit your thesis to the Game Studies Thesis Competition 2025! www.pelitutkimus.fi/tiedotteet-e... (scroll down for English)

During the past year I have been studying Finnish folk competitions, like wife-carrying, woolsock run, air guitar championship, and name dropping competition. Today my abstract on the topic was accepted. So my first public properly academic talk on the topic is coming up in Nordic Digra in Turku!

Hyvää kalevalanpäivää! Kalevalaan "kansalliseepoksena" on kuitenkin asiallista suhtaustua aika kriittisesti.

Our paper is out, and it is open access! "Game Rules as Player Tools: Introspective Rulebook Method." It introduces a new game research method, where the researcher reflects on and transforms the rules they play by. The work is mostly by the awesome first author Doruk Balcı!

"Kenelläkään on tuskin mitään sitä vastaan, että väestön koulutustaso nousee ja maahan valmistuu lisää maistereita ja tohtoreita. Mutta jos Suomeen tarvitaan nimenomaan osaajia, ei vaatimustasoa voi laskea loputtomasti. Kai osaajan pitäisi oikeasti osatakin jotain eikä vain kutsua itseään osaajaksi.

My colleague Ville Kankainen will defend his PhD "Hybrid Play Experience and Design in Tabletop Gaming" on 21 February. #gamestudies #analog #boardgames #tabletop www.tuni.fi/en/news/vill...

The original Dungeons & Dragons was published in January of 1974. Jacob L. Moreno died in May of 1974. Talk about passing the torch.

Kieron Gillen picks fave superhero tabletop RPGS. In my mind these are quite recent, I think the commercial systems I've spent most time playing are Aberrant and maybe the 1980s Marvel Super Heroes. Need to check these out!
