Outdated views on grid reliability and slow-moving institutions pose a far greater threat to a resilient grid than any single technology. We should stay focused on building a diversified electric grid capable of responding to a rapidly changing world. www.latitudemedia.com/news/a-diver...

President Zelenskyy will be at the White House tomorrow to sign a US-Ukraine minerals deal. What does that mean for securing our critical minerals supply chain? Potentially nothing w/ some serious reputational risk. I wrote a piece this morning for Forbes evaluating the deal…🧵

To be very clear, there is no good current evidence that Ukraine has any major mineral deposits that would make a dent in U.S. demand. We have no clue if their resources - especially rare earths - make any economic sense. They have lithium, but we have plenty more.

Chaotic times for cobalt. The DRC just banned cobalt exports for 4 months due to oversupply (low prices). Additionally, Rwanda-backed group invading eastern DRC and occupying resources. DRC president asking US to buy cobalt from them and get involved. Lots of moving parts.

Great thread from @cleanpowerdave.bsky.social. Similar to oil and gas “shortage worries” in the past, we’ve managed to find nearly endless lithium resources in the past few years. Tech improvements + just looking harder goes a pretty long way.

Last Friday, the US Geological Survey published their annual mineral commodity summaries. One major takeaway — our two largest mineral trading partners we are most reliant on? Not just China, but Canada too. Each country exports 21 different minerals that the US is > 50% reliant on via imports.

Happy to have received this outreach from King County, but man, what a microcosm of some of the building issues we face today. Planning began in 2016(!!!) and construction is tentatively scheduled to be completed mid-2028. 12 years for a water storage tank. We have to learn how to do things faster.

As White House resources disappear, the IRA + CHIPS Dashboard remains alive and well. If you need battery, EV, solar, wind, and semiconductor manufacturing data, you can find it all here. Jobs, investment dollars, and important political data too. It will continue to be updated.

Fascinating map. Probably not surprising, but any blue location has a light rail station (Northgate on the north side, Othello on the south side, plenty downtown and by UW). More light rail, please! Seattle loves it. Let's speed up that West Seattle/Ballard 2032 timeline & get the east side opened!

this is incredible stuff. most state DOTs would spend tens of billions on highway expansions to try and see numbers like this (that wouldn’t even pan out anyway thanks to induced demand lol)

Reported last Friday, TSMC has started 4-nm semiconductor production at its new Arizona facility. Quality and yield are at (if not better) than facilities in Taiwan. By 2028, 2-nm production will commence. A significant American milestone.

I don't need to remind everyone how much more work needs to be done, but 96%(!!!) of power capacity added in the U.S. last year came from clean energy. Stunning IMO. Solar, wind, & batteries are cheap, plentiful, & make too much financial sense.

In April, I wrote for @forbes.com about how 2024 could be the year for the American lithium industry. Turned out - it was! A lot happened & I break it down in an updated piece released on Sunday. The article gives you all the goods, but let me share some important takeaways...🧵

It would be great if elected officials, city planners, and police departments took road design and safety seriously. Or even attempted basic enforcement of speeding, aggressive driving, expired tabs, etc. Everyone is aware of how ruthless driving is post-COVID, but no one is doing a thing about it.

Investing in US lithium production could push down global EV costs today and accelerate American EV sales tomorrow under a climate-friendly administration - via @jackconness.bsky.social www.forbes.com/sites/energy...

Remarkable growth in the U.S. solar manufacturing industry. Spurred by the Inflation Reduction Act, facilities are quickly being built across the country. "At full capacity, U.S. solar module factories can produce enough to meet nearly all demand for solar in the United States." 🔌💡

Just wait until the Sonics come back >>>

"Texas could lose out on more jobs than any other state if Project 2025’s energy and climate provisions were fully realized" Investing in clean manufacturing insulates our economy from economic competitors, no matter if your state is Red or Blue www.houstonchronicle.com/business/ene...

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Energy's Loan Program Office announced a $6.85 billion loan (conditional) for two battery plants in Kokomo, IN. It's a joint venture between Stellantis & Samsung SDI. Project would create 3,200 construction jobs & 2,800 permanent manufacturing jobs. 🔌💡

I missed this from a few weeks ago, but Canadian Solar has committed $712M to Shelby County, KY for a utility-scale battery storage manufacturing facility. 1,600 jobs. It's the largest economic development project in Shelby County history. +35 Trump County. Massie (R) district. 🔌💡

Announcing a ~$6B conditional commitment to @rivianofficial.bsky.social for their Georgia facility. The Georgia factory expand the production from the plant in Illinois and produce S.U.V.s that sell for about $45,000. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/25/b...

. @robbieorvis.bsky.social and I spoke with Daily Energy Insider about the future of the Inflation Reduction Act. As Robbie summed up nicely, major manufacturing investments over the past few years are driving U.S. economic competitiveness globally. It's also creating jobs, jobs, and more jobs.
