The superbowl Squarespace ad was fucking genius. An advertisement of Squarespace’s (and other’s) own meaningless commodification and design-ification of the entire planet. Turn the captions on to stare straight into the abyss.

Recently finish the @aptshadow.bsky.social's Final Architecture trilogy cause I was looking for a slick, modern space opera with cosmic horror nods. It was that! But it also feels like this stealthy update to atompunk/raygun gothic motifs. Like I feel like the covers should have been more like...

I decided this year I'd try reading a few commercially-written romantasy novels to better understand a dominant literary genre, even though I am incredibly not the intended audience. Feeling amazed and mystified at genre conventions that would seem totally obvious to 90% of the women in my life.

The genre of 'Dark Academia' bums me out -- not cause it's bad or anything, but because it feels like the funeral dirge of a certain form of thriving. Like, how sad is it that a book about getting a serious liberal arts education and wearing old clothes is now shelved in the Fantasy section?

An absolutely superior way of looking at the "languages" section on your character sheet. Never seen an approach like this.

Time to be blunt. With the disintegration of trad social media, AI BS, & the constant stream of distracting bad news, it is harder than ever to get readers for SFF magazines. If what we do is important to you, please boost our posts wherever you see them. ❤️🦄

My latest YouTube video got hundreds of comments about IRL TTRPG organizing, variations in playstyle, the fracturing of interests in TTRPGS. Tons of thoughtful stuff. But these are the kinds of comments that keep me up at night.

Yochai responds. Class Act.

Having been Twitter-brained for years myself, I think there are a lot of people who say shit like “I mean I’m not mad, I’m just DISAPPOINTED that this person chose to…” and think they sound like Very Serious People, when in fact they sound like sycophantic mean girls tittering at a coffee klatch.

Oh good Yochai Gal has quit Bluesky because of the Surely Well-Meaning folks on here who felt the need to Express Their Concern. This is a good place and nothing like Twitter.

The list for year-end 2024 -- 54 books read, 17 TTRPGs played. Lots of little lessons along the way.

I have never understood the substantive difference between “your character is basically unable to die” and “you have a level 1 rat catcher who can die at any moment, to be replaced immediately with an identical level 1 rat catcher.” But for some this seems to be an identity-defining difference.
