🚨 PhD position available for Oct 25 🔬Using advanced microscopy to understand how keratin networks control tissue mechanics An interdisciplinary #cellbiology #biophysics collaboration with Ruby Peters & @alicepyne.bsky.social 👇 Apply by March 14 www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Per their request, we decided to go for it. I changed the title to "The strain on antioxidant publishing" and did a bunch of ctrl find+replace for words like "publisher" with "gut niche" and just sent it back. Find the paper here: direct.mit.edu/qss/article/... 1/3

Looking for an enthusiastic post-doc to investigate how experience shapes the brain. Drosophila neurogenetics, molecular and cellular mechanisms, imaging, optogenetics, neural circuits and behaviour will be used. At University of Birmingham campus, UK. Application deadline 19 March. Pls RT.

Gene editing technology began by people studying salt marshes. Ozempic began by folks studying the venom of Gila Monsters. Support for basic science has empowered us to understand our world. Tethering it to applications health has transformed and saved countless lives.

I for one, accept and welcome our clam overlords with open arms

Our latest... Congrats to Seb Sorge, Victor Girard & coauthors for devising HolFast, a chemically defined (holidic) diet for #Drosophila development that performs almost as well as a yeast diet. If you study developmental #nutrition or #metabolism please try it out... www.cell.com/developmenta...

Stem cell or deathy looking skull??? #fluorescencefriday

#Microscopy folk: If Stardist has stopped working for you since the recent update, reset the tensor flow update site on FIJI!

My latest preprint! Will be in Arthropod Struct & Dev't journal. Fine dissections of CRISPR phenotypes for Dll, Sp6-9, dac, Exd, & hth in the crustacean Parhyale for ALL APPENDAGES: labrum, antennae, mouthparts, thoracic, biramous, and telson. 🧵 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Once more with feeling! Hey! Are you using a script to scrape FlyBase? Just stop. NOW. You're crashing the site for everyone. Yes, we mean YOU.

hive mind, please help - I am looking for an anti-myc epitope primary antibody that is NOT raised in rabbit, mouse, or chicken - is there such an antibody that would work for IF? #drosophila #cellculture

Proventriculus or weird apple?

First day back cycling in to the lab. Half way there someone in a car pulled out into the cycle lane so I had to slam on the brakes and my chain snapped...

Rapamycin ... not so good for your wounds 🧪 #drosophila #devbio

Excited to see our new gut hormone paper in @naturecomms.bsky.social in collaboration with our alumnus Dr. Yuto Yoshinari (Gunma Univ.) and others! A high-protein diet-responsive gut hormone regulates behavioral and metabolic optimization in Drosophila melanogaster. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Missed the publishiversary by a couple of weeks, but its been over a year since my main PhD work was set free into the world! 🤯 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

PhD position available in my lab through the EASTBio to research mechanisms of Osteoarthritis using zebrafish Please get in touch if you are interested Applications deadline:Jan 17th If selected, interviews: March biology.ed.ac.uk/eastbio/how-... @ZebrafishRock

This is the upper jaw of a crocodile embryo, with nuclear staining in orange & proliferating cells in blue. This data helped us to build a mechanical simulation of crocodile head scale patterning. Learn more here ⬇️ 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We're hiring a postdoc! Please forward to people you know who are looking for positions. Interested in studying how metabolism is wired to support fertility? 🔬🪰 Come join us! Ad to go live next week, but informal enquiries encouraged.

Nilay and @amberalhadeff.bsky.social have this beautiful and informative primer out on gut-brain comm. Check it out!

🪰My personal favorite “understudied” anatomical structure of the fruit fly #drosophila is the “proventriculus” (AKA the cardia), where the foregut meets the midgut. Here are #confocal images of various Gal4 lines, green. Blue is DAPI (DNA), magenta is phalloidin (f-actin).

Our latest preprint, Lena Lampe, Clare Newell and colleagues figured out how metamorphosing #Drosophila avoid drying out. The larva makes a lipid barrier of hyper-long hydrocarbons (>C27 and longer) and stores it in the fat body until needed by the pupa. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Happy #FluorescenceFriday from our lab to yours

Can I ask you to share a PhD advert at Bristol Uni please? Rhomboid proteases play a role in neurons that is essential for life- but it is not characterised. Got a student interested in cell biology, electrophysiology and neurobiology? Send them our way! tinyurl.com/56f24f7c

A question for neurofolks doing thermogenetics experiment. It is quite common in the field to perform long (i.e. >12h) thermogenetics activations - we often do TrpA1 activations for 24hr, for instance. At what point do we have to assume that a neuron gets exhausted and calls it a day (or a life)?

Behold, a very good boy

You asked for it...

Coincidentally for #Flyday yesterday, @ejrideout.bsky.social came to our insect research meeting and told us about how lipids are stored differently in males and females #Drosophila. Females eat sugars and convert them to fats, males don't care. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
