Sheriff Sam Page was a major booster of HB10, which forced more cooperation between NC sheriffs and ICE. I asked him if he had other state-level immigration legislation in mind, now that he is running a high-profile campaign for state Senate. #ncpol www.theassemblync.com/politics/phi...

New podcast! I talked with Matt Calabria, who's leading @ncgovernor.bsky.social's Helene recovery office, about the funding requests from the #ncga and federal government: play.prx.org/listen?ge=pr... Interview highlights: www.wunc.org/politics/202... #ncpol

Tillis: "As this effort proceeds, we also need to make sure there are no unintended cuts to vital positions, especially workers who are providing critical functions like helping Western North Carolina recover from the devastation of Helene.” www.citizen-times.com/story/news/l...

🤞 and 🙏 for no more hurricanes or floods.

“Obviously, a 90% cut to our federal funding will impact the level of support we're able to efficiently provide to communities who need it, like Western North Carolinians recovering from Helene.” www.citizen-times.com/story/news/l...

HUD is the agency that funds much of the housing reconstruction programs in North Carolina, of which there's of course a huge need post-Helene #ncpol

a good example of how the world is getting dumber. the new politico playbook writer didn't know who FDR was until a reader told him about that whole "new deal" thing. this newsletter is read by every important person in DC.

I think this really sums up a lot of the challenges people, especially those who have lost TSA eligibility, or are about to lose it, are facing. FEMA keeps saying they reach out to people through the portal but many aren’t able to access it, and will never be able to, without actual hands-on help.

I spoke with several U.S. Forest Service employees from western North Carolina fired over the weekend. Most were working on Helene recovery and wildfire response in some capacity. The mass firings are a gut punch to the already understaffed agency dealing with so much in the wake of Helene.

“We’re grieving for our lost colleagues. I wept through the weekend just thinking about having to return to work and watch them pick up their things on Tuesday.” www.citizen-times.com/story/news/l...

Kentucky flooding death toll continues to rise. Meanwhile people are trying to clean up mud as fast as possible before snow comes Tuesday night and makes travel conditions even worse.

this is incredible and terrifying

Finally got around to making a radar graphic for #Helene. One for the record books

hotels are finally seeing extensions through 3/6 reflected in their systems

A team effort story from @kentuckypublicradio.org www.lpm.org/news/2025-02...

Anytime a storm is brewing, your local forecasters are getting the latest data from NOAA. As the agency faces an uncertain future, one thing's for sure: for-profit companies would struggle to replicate NOAA's weather-forecasting prowess.

Here’s a story about how fema screwed up and extended hotel stays for Helene survivors, fixed it, and then reversed course, agreeing to honor the extension. Still, a bunch of people will have to be out of hotels in March and don’t know where they’ll go. www.citizen-times.com/story/news/l...
