This is extremely a thing that I would do (but just feel anxious for forever as I lack the nuclear engineer friend)

Anyway, the movie doesn’t have to be good for going to the movie theater on a 7 degree Tuesday after a real stressful couple weeks to be GREAT

Ours hasn’t been grinding properly for months so I was troubleshooting today. I really only clean it when it acts up. I’m on 2/2 fancy grinders in my adult life.

My cat lost her eye in freak response to a routine tooth extraction and I could not have afforded the thousands to save her life without pet insurance. I am so grateful.

But this change in conventional wisdom lines up with the development of expensive little pellets for cleaning grinders and I sort of think I am being played

My mom always served baked beans with ketchup and I always wondered if that was a thing from her British grandmother

Seems to me like it’s more that there are hiccups in the supply. Like it’s not that we can’t get eggs for weeks on end, but sometimes I go to the store and there are no eggs.

Oh dang, the ebooks, too, probably

I used to make these noodles a lot like right post college because they were so cheap (and good!) and the red bell pepper was a real special splurge

Update: apparently once Bookshop dot org has created a way for booksellers to integrate ebook sales into their websites, bookstores will get 100% of the profits, per Publishers Weekly. That’s great!
comment in response to post
Good for you! I assume you’re getting those PDFs responsibly and not pirating them, lol. And buying ebooks from a non-Amazon seller, since that is the actual point of my post.

Kobo stopped selling ebooks through American bookstores in 2018. I didn’t say Kobo failed, I said their plan to sell ebooks through bookstores failed. I hear good things about their new ereaders. www.bookweb.org/kobo-ebooks

I’ve been eyeing that one, too! Glad to hear it’s a good experience.

I really like Kobo and I’ve heard good things about their new ereaders. I was sad when they got bought out by Rakuten, but that’s the way of the world.

Most publishers balk at selling ebooks through a service without adequate DRM.
comment in response to post
Right, but these books have DRM. You don’t get a file, you get access to it within their apps. I’ve already purchased a book to test!

And yes, if your indie signs up for this program and you’re happy to read on an iPad or similar, this is a great option for ebooks. If you’re reading on an LCD screen and think this is exciting, I assume you already know you can get ebooks from many non-Amazon places!
comment in response to post
Oh for sure those people exist! And this is a great alternative for him! I hope he makes the switch to this or already buys his ebooks from one of the other more industry-friendly services.
comment in response to post
The best way to support your local indie is to buy directly from them in person, from their own website, over the phone, via email. If you can’t do those things, bkshp dot org is a great alternative that gives your indie an affiliate cut instead of their 40-50% profit from direct sales.

I am becoming the joker over here.

I don't buy books on Amazon unless it really isn't available elsewhere! I own a Nook! I get audiobooks at Libro dot fm! I worked in ebooks for seven years! I just don't see this working in any kind of industry-changing way.
comment in response to post
1) You do not get an ebook file, you can access it only through their app (so no sideloading anywhere) 2) Dedicated Kindle readers will never leave their beloved eink ereader to read on their phones 3) Kobo did this 10 years ago and failed, though they had huge support and displays in major indies

Sure!

Sorry, I’m projecting my timeline’s excitement onto you. Please enjoy your good news!
comment in response to post
No drama! Kobo’s great. I am just surprised to see publishing people thinking that bookshop dot org’s ebooks will save indie bookstores when we’ve all been through this before
comment in response to post
I think it’s great, truly, I just don’t see a dedicated Kindle reader leaving their eink behind to read on their phone. I hope it works! But I worked in ebooks for a long time and nothing ever talked people out of the convenience of a kindle.
