In 2010, all 7 Rio Arriba, NM candidates for sheriff had legal or disciplinary problems. Since then, two went on to serve as sheriff and serve time for crimes they committed as sheriff. The following sheriff, not a 2010 candidate, died last month after suspected to be driving his patrol truck drunk.
