Y'all! I just called the #USCapitalSwitchboard &a person answered!!! A real person, not a phonebot. You know that means? It means they're not overloaded w calls. So PLEASE CALL! (202) 224-3121 When a person or a bot answers, ay the name of ur senator, you'll be transferred, & u can leave a message.

This is helpful, esp. for anyone new to peer review. "If you think the topic is not worthy of study, you should decline to do the review" Exactly! It can be helpful to remember that editors don't send it out if it doesn't have any chance of getting published. tl;dr: don't be a jerk when reviewing!

Here's something I don't often share on my BlueSky profile: me playing the #piano. All work and no play makes Jae a dull girl, after all. Wind, by Brian Crain. youtu.be/o1P-K4gAQtw

Was looking thru my 2011 MA thesis on #codeswitching & noticed something... Each excerpt is 4 lines: Line 1 is the utterance; Line 2 is the gloss, Line 3 is English. Line 4 is paraling info. Lines 1-3 are in the same font, line 3 is in italics and Line 4 is .... wait for it.... in Comic Sans. 😅

This term I’m teaching 2 courses on #Japanese #sociolinguistics. On the 1st day I asked students to tell me what questions they have. One asked “What problem does sociolinguistics solve?” I’ll definitely be asking them this at the mid-point & again at the end of the semester! How would you answer?

Really want to make this my winter break OOO message!

Everyone who works in academia should be reading this...

This is (unintentionally I assume) an argument for serif fonts. On my phone, the main different b/w kuchi & ro is size. On my computer, you can see the serifs, so one is clearly kanji &the other clearly katakana. Using MSWord, compare MS Mincho w/ MS Gothic or ud digi kyokasho & see the differences

Here's what I'm reading this morning. Among other important points the author makes, I like this one in particular: ""writing isn’t really something you learn or teach—it’s something you practice" Nnext we need the #languagelearning version of this article. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

Ummm…..

Was looking thru notes I took while listening to an English-lang. webinar and saw that I wrote “learner 同士のinteraction.” I don’t have any recollection of #code-switching and I doubt I would have done this if I were typing (bc of the extra step required to switch input method). 1/ #appliedlinguistics

Optimist: the cup is half full. Pessimist: the cup is half empty. Japanese language learner: コップ?カップ?グラス?ガラス?どっち?? (FYI both koppu & kappu refer to different kinds of cups, gurasu is for drinking glasses & garasu refers to material, e.g., glass as opposed to plastic) #Japanese #languagelearning

Bc of paywall, I could only read the first bit of this article, but people w/in #Japan and beyond have been criticizing Japan’s resistance to 夫婦別姓 for as long as I can remember (I first moved to Japan in the 1990s). The time is long past to make it happen. #ジェンダー mainichi.jp/articles/202...

Looking forward to listening to this!!

Heads up. If you think there’s any app or online platform where your words aren’t going to be scrapped and used as AI training data, think again. Also note: if you opt out, you’ll lose access to dictation, text suggestions, transcription, translation and probably other functions as well.

Really looking forward to reading this!

Have to figure out a way to watch this year since we’ll be in the U.S. (and we canceled out Japanese tv subscription)

Hey @scriptingjapan.bsky.social should we (could we) make a starter pack for Japanese linguistics (broadly defined)? (I confess I do not know how to do that, but I’m sure I can figure it out).

Next semester, I’m teaching a new #sociolinguistics grad course on E. Asian #languages. The guiding question is “what do #Chinese, #Japanese or #Korean teachers need to know about sociolinguistics?” Please share your recs for readings, esp. re Chinese or Korean socioing. #langsky #linguistics

Thanks for this! I’ll share it with my students!
