New: a Tory peer has tabled an amendment to Wes Streeting's smoking ban, demanding a complete prohibition of all tobacco products by 2040 www.spectator.co.uk/article/tory...

Quite the beginning of this Charlotte Proudman interview...

High voter apathy and a divided electorate means that maximising turnout is key for each party; one pollster suggests that crunch European fixtures for Tottenham, United and Chelsea next Thursday will depress voter numbers after 7pm www.spectator.co.uk/article/fara...

This week's column on who could win from the unwinding of Labour's coalition www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-...

Next week’s election results will doubtless reawaken the subject of a ‘coalition’ – whatever Robert Jenrick meant by that. t.co/EjByV2BNgW

Chris Philp has since happily joined his fellow frontbencher on this new crusade: part of an established pattern of Tory MPs following in Jenrick’s wake www.spectator.co.uk/article/why-...

Quite the journey

Calum Miller is the type of MP whom the Tories would once wanted to have in their party. Here he explains the Lib Dems’ plans for this parliament: t.co/YTSxhHa5p6

New Keir Starmer Toby jug just dropped. Only 1,500 left!

Seems the only person not added to Robert Jenrick's group chat was Jeffrey Goldberg www.spectator.co.uk/article/jenr...

Nigel Farage has been talking about ‘parking the tanks’ of his ‘people’s army’ on ‘Labour’s lawn’ for a decade plus But much like his favourite singer Frank Sinatra, he hopes the best is yet to come: t.co/sZNAogzcjZ

Tories launch their policy renewal programme, encouraging experts and members of the public to submit thoughts online:

“Call Me Maybe” ringing out at Newton Aycliffe Working Men’s Club

Reform’s efforts in the north have been helped by the limited Conservative recovery since 4 July. A number of Tory GE candidates remark on how little infrastructure there was locally. ‘Much of the grassroots has simply shrivelled and died’, says one PPC. www.spectator.co.uk/article/nige...

Keir Starmer's tax return just published:

Through no real fault of her own, Kemi Badenoch will likely find that her Welsh woes are only just beginning t.co/29W3Y5aNsn

Quite the quote in the @whazell.bsky.social piece on "Starmer's women problem"

Picking up fury from Welsh Conservatives today. Some angry at the "reselection" of Russell George in a new constituency, 48 hours before he was charged. Others shocked to discover that Tom James - Welsh Tory director whose name appears on party material - was being probed too

Tory spox on betgate: "Current members of staff who have been charged are being suspended with immediate effect... We are cooperating fully with the Gambling Commission to ensure that their investigation can conclude swiftly and transparently.”

Lot of attention on Craig Williams. But worth noting that among those charged for betting gate was Russell George MS, reselected just this weekend to stand for the Welsh Tories next year. Is that tenable?

Can’t wait for the week after 2 May when a bunch of Lab/Ref/Tory councillors have to do the realpolitik business of pacts and deals with each other. Expect similar cries of hypocrisy/betrayal then too

Boris Johnson’s reported musings at a recent Saudi event: “I was very lucky when I was Mayor of London because it was a bit like being a Sheikh… I was in charge. I was a monarch - nobody could challenge me.” via Telegraph diary today

Netflix drama about the battle for Scunthorpe steelworks please

Perhaps, in a generation’s time, steel will become a matter entirely for free enterprise once more. But judging by the contributions in today’s debate, those days look a long way off. www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-...

There are 5 MPs who were in the Commons when British Steel was last denationalised (for the second time) in 1988: Edward Leigh, Roger Gale, Jeremy Corbyn, David Davis and Diane Abbott

MPs should be instinctively wary about one-day bills. An unhappy recent history:

Reform storming to victory in Manchester; the Greens crushing Labour in London. A vision of 2029? t.co/v0WaMOjUze

A ‘K’ for Andrew Mitchell means every Tory MP elected prior to 2001 now has a knighthood

Trump backtracks on day 80 in office:

Very funny if Trump ends up saving Ukraine by crashing the global economy

New: Kim Leadbeater has written to colleagues to say that her assisted dying bill has now been pushed back. The next debate in the Commons for Report Stage will now take place on Friday 16th May.

"The planned razing of M&S’s art deco flagship saddens them; the proliferation of American candy stores maddens them."

Big tech and Wall Street this week:

League Against Cruel Sports confirm that Dan Norris MP has stepped down from his role and an interim chair has been appointed from the Board of Trustees

David Lloyd George’s statue boarded up in parly square. No word yet on whether it’s been caused by a Welsh antidisestablishmentarian… GLA spox says “structural damage has occurred” with an engineer on site Monday to repair it ASAP

New: Bristol City Council has blocked Arron Banks' use of the slogan "Banksy for Bristol". Reform UK has hit back, insisting that "at no stage has Mr Banks attempt to assert he is connected with or competing with the artist Banksy" www.spectator.co.uk/article/arro...

The most expensive judicial contest in US history concludes today:
