There's a few stories but they more or less are all based in thankfulness of a good catch in a time of hunger. The stargazing part is probably retconning; the sardines are sorta proof there's actually fish in the fish pie. I'm sure it's fine, sardines are nice fish and fish pie is delicious.

My breakthrough in my early 20s was realizing if i do a little research and fill out as much as i can beforehand it'll be quick and easy. If i show up with a question and a goal i'll still get there, I'll just hafta make three lefts instead of a right.

This is just straight-up opinion but one of the most effective ways to calm traffic in New York would be to get rid of the large street signs overhanging intersections. Anything intended to speed the flow of urban traffic is poison to humans not in motor vehicles.

There is definitely something to what you say. There have been experiments (NL of course) in removing traffic signs from some areas; the idea being if drivers have to observe and react to conditions instead of assuming permission to proceed they will behave more safely.

People are probably far too sanguine about rattlesnakes in the northeast but there's one trail at one waterfall in western mass that's absolutely crawling with them and we should definitely focus on rattlesnake management in the state parks. A small number of rattlesnakes are too big a risk.

And the real infrastructure has barely changed! But we've tried to turn narrow city streets into strodes. It's been crazy to watch the literal property grab by car owners; previous forms of use have been made impossible by automobile proliferation. If we acknowledge this from the start?

I know it's hard to believe in the modern age but streets really were third places especially for children in living memory. Cue the sepia footage filter, but I played on asphalt in all weather from the age of probably seven or eight on. A city far less friendly to everyday driving is a kinder city.

No argument with your proposals but I think the SUV in the room bears mentioning... This is maybe informed by my age and childhood in Brooklyn during a diffferent period in the city, but this and nearly every other thing that ails human motion in nyc has the same solution; fewer motor vehicles.

Idk I think the problem is starting with this as a premise. Not like in a "I'm opposed to humanity as a thing" way but more as maybe we'd be a little better off not seeing ourselves as an inevitability that the world should be bent to accommodate. Henry Gee knows the deal.

If you have some shit to talk I recommend you google for six fucking seconds where you will find things like the following. 313 of 51,801 injuries resulting from crashes in nyc in 2022 were bike-on-pedestrian. Of 259 total fatalities, 3 were the result of bike-on-pedestrian collisions. Please stop.

Go find your own research supporting that then babes. I'm not a librarian. I can tell you anecdotally there were definitely ebikes pre 2021 bc the boys were flying all over the city on them delivering stuff during the pandy. But if there's been a jump since 2021 I'm sure it'll be easy to find out!

I honestly think the rules of the road should be similar to boats, where there's a hierarchy of right-of-way from powered to sail to rowed but at the same time like if you're in ny harbor that Staten Island ferry is not stopping no matter what ask me how I know lol.

It's really not! The scary things people observe and experience are contested intersections which, fair, and delivery cyclists on ebikes doing the last hundred feet of their route on a sidewalk at relatively low speed. This is like stranger danger. Or quicksand. It's a frightening edge case.

This is not and has never been the case. It may be anecdotally frightening, but in New York City, where space sharing is chaotic, fraught and happens at a quick pace, the danger you describe is historically nonexistent.

100%. The arc for Catholics who are raised in the church and are normal is credulousness peaks right around seventh grade and confirmation. You get a two year glide & as a high school sophomore you start picking apart dogma and by adulthood you're comfortably arms-length and independent-thinking.

Columbia County airport somehow got approval for an expansion nobody liked much; the owner was even not particularly aggressive in pursuing it. It just kinda happened. Turns out it was being used as a transfer point for renditions and needed a longer runway. I guess it paid well for him? Idk.
