I asked this earlier today (as a non-lawyer): at what point do judges escalate the obfuscation/stonewalling/cute games being used to flout court orders? At what point do we order Elon Musk to appear in a courtroom? At what point to we hold people in contempt?

WTAF?!

NIH indirects case update: Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges. Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides: (I'm paraphrasing here)

It's #WoodpeckerWednesday again! Here's my final full chart for this winter's cast of unusual characters. I document the individual intergrade (and otherwise unusual) Northern Flickers that turn up in my yard. This winter had some returnees plus a bunch of new faces! 🎨🪶 #SciArt #BirdArt

And here it is, my Joker moment. I am insane now.

From NSF EAR program director Raleigh Martin on LinkedIn #climatesky #greensky

“NSF fired about 10 percent of its staff at the end of Tuesday, removing 168 people who included most of the agency’s probationary employees and all of its experts, a class of contract workers who are specialists in niche scientific fields.” — www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

JD Vance is so nauseatingly unlikeable that he’s literally dragging down the AfD’s approval rating

I dunno guys when the unelected Nazi shadow president says the executive branch doesn’t have to follow court orders is that bad?

A huge decision from Judge Amir Ali, meticulously reasoned and utterly scathing, finding that Trump’s foreign aid freeze is almost certainly an illegal and arbitrary abuse of power. He orders the immediate restoration of all international assistance. s3.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

This letter is remarkable. One of the interesting things is that it builds a careful case for state bar authorities to disbar any attys engaging in this kind of political quid pro quo. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Check out our new method for summarising BEAST trees. The CCD0-MAP tree gives much more accurate results than MCC tree. It returns the tree that maximises the product of sampled clade probabilities regardless of whether that tree was sampled. Highly recommend :) journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...

how can this be real life DoD got rid of the name 'bragg' name bc he was a racist confederate general. but they are now changing it back to 'bragg,' now named after just some random other dude named bragg. 😂 www.bbc.com/news/article...

I am deeply saddened to have learned of the death, on Feb 5, 2025, of Elisabeth Vrba—a fantastically creative scientist and a warm, wonderful human being. She leaves us a legacy of original macroevolutionary thinking that is still fresh and illuminating.

Rocks I saw today. I liked them.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Another funding opportunity is gone. NSF archived the the Career-Life Balance program which provided supplemental funding when researchers are on family leave. The small strides we had made toward improving representation in science are being undone so fast. new.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

Exactly as predicted www.reuters.com/world/trump-...

Kind of feel like the USAID folks should force the U.S. military to come get them, whatever that means. Can’t imagine a lot of countries would be that excited about the military showing up to rendite random aid workers.

The Treasury Department right now. People are turning out against Musk and DOGE staging a takeover of the Treasury’s payment system. This crowd is big. The whole block is packed. “Lock him up,” everyone yells.

This @washingtonpost.com story is so important that I'm gifting it. These people appear to be operating totally illegally and outside the Constitution -- and they know it. wapo.st/40LVERn

No words

Elon Musk is a terrible president.

what the actual fuck

That NSF is combing through grants for keywords like gender, equity, scientific literacy, etc, in order to cancel those grants, is frustrating when you consider that Broader Impacts ARE A REQUIREMENT OF GETTING THE GRANT. In case you're not familiar, here are examples 🧪 new.nsf.gov/funding/lear...

This is a doubly bad sign about the havoc that appointees like Patel, Hegseth, and Vought could wreak. We were told Wiles was going to discipline and organize the second term Trump operation. Instead it's just maniacs running wild while grandpa signs things and watches television.

In case you were wondering why @sanders.senate.gov is right and billionaires should not exist. This is a software bug in the system.
