Social media researchers desperately need to rethink issues of harm and consent. I can't believe anyone thought this was ok to do. Thread:

This is a dangerous moment for even the most powerful aircraft, since opportunistic ambush predation by submarines is always a risk.

No, you should not. After you watch Sinners, go back and buy another ticket and watch it again. Then think deeply about what you've just watched. (If you crave a book, then find thee some Octavia Butler and read that.)

Look at this tinpot dipshit. The whole lot of them are shameful embarrassments who will be marked in history as spineless hypocrites and criminal buffoons. They're parading around the world like they own it, but their moment will be brief and their descent will be swift and precipitous.

my aunt has a backyard crow who comes by to wash food in her fountain

Things i have done in public restrooms with blokes: Patted a stranger's back and said "you good dude?" As he threw up in the sink. Had a good chat about football scarves. Recommended a pub to a stag do. Toilets are just toilets. As Odent implies, any anti-trans dialog about toilets is effing weird

I'm going to be looking for new work, probably in the area of trust and safety product management/trust and safety lead type roles. Time to drag out my professional identity profiles everywhere, I guess.

So I didn’t realize today was Alien day, but I had a dream last night that I walking around with a chestburster ready to pop… so… maybe that means something? Anyway, enjoy some Alien art

It occurs to me that creating an archive of announcement/event/advert/whatever that's linked to contemporary responses would be valuable. (Ideally a mix of media and forms: surveys, social media content, columns, &c.) Wondering if this is easyish to crowdsource into Airtable or something.

It sometimes seems like a huge task to explain what’s being done to trans people to casual observers who don’t pay much attention to it, but Séamas does a great job here of plainly and succinctly explaining why you should be appalled

My grandfather, forever either in prison, on trial, or working on a con, would have been all over generative AI, and he’d absolutely have been caught because using it to cut corners without it giving your dog five ears or inventing a country is *more* labour-intensive than just doing things.

A colloquial Polish phrase about someone who’s overdressed is odjebać się jak szczur na otwarcie kanału. It means “you look like a rat for the opening of a sewer.”

Always amazed by people who can join in the "using only memes on your phone" threads because (a) phone, ugh, that's a cramped and horrid place to try to live (b) this implies an organisational approach to meme consumption that I cannot really fathom (c) my brain and subtext is a whole other thing.

People encounter this with their IoT devices and DRMed media, but this is a general property of cloudification: power, and therefore decisions that affect you directly, are in someone else's hands. Government and military systems are impacted in the same way. Why tolerate this?

Yes, Ike had a cartoon book. Cover by (I shit you not) Frank Frazetta.

The EHRC was captured by transphobes under the Tories and Labour could have appointed a new head but they did not, because they are also transphobic. Bigoted shits, the lot of them.

If you want to pose questions to a somewhat-knowing oracle, I offer an affordable service that doesn't violate copyright, traumatise data workers, materially damage the environment, or upset terns*. College educated, GSOH. * I'm assuming terns hate AI. Not sure why, don't really want to ask tbqh.

LLMs are nothing more than models of the distribution of the word forms in their training data, with weights modified by post-training to produce somewhat different distributions. Unless your use case requires a model of a distribution of word forms in text, indeed, they suck and aren't useful.

Are you all prepared to receive an interesting new form of trauma from cybersecurity obsessed reddit nerds talking about dating?

Has anyone ever had a book with a publisher and gotten the rights back to your content so you can control it? Basically my publisher isn’t printing copies of my book anymore and didn’t tell me and are directing people to Amazon.

“Hungary’s amended law appears to enable the use of real-time biometric surveillance at Pride events, which is an application clearly falling under the AI Act’s prohibitions,” said Italian social democratic European lawmaker Brando Benifei, one of the two architects of the EU’s AI Act.
