"Finally, we emphasize that efforts to remove atmospheric carbon by means of any CDR technology will ultimately be futile for addressing the climate crisis without urgent and drastic emissions reductions and a transition to clean energy." 🧪

Stumbled upon this from yonks ago. Owl identification made easy

"It is impossible to be a top-line manager and administrator and mentor and researcher and writer and outreach officer and IT expert and online instructor and pedagogical innovator and recruiter and teacher and marker and external examiner and press pundit and grant bidder and editor."

I’ve been reflecting on my time at #WEF25 with @arcticbasecamp.bsky.social. I learned a lot and, while progress is slow, I met great people pushing for climate action. That gives me hope. I wrote about my experience for the Shackleton Journal: tinyurl.com/EcologistInDavos 🧪🦑🦉🌊

New post on The Climate Brink from Zeke @hausfath.bsky.social about our climate future. With current policies, we’re on track for a bit less than 3C, with 2030 NDCs we’re on track for about 2.5C, and with net zero pledges we’re on track for a bit less than 2C. www.theclimatebrink.com/p/moving-awa...

Global ocean temperatures set new record in 2024

@nature.com is keen to find out how scientists are using @bsky.app and whether it has become their go-to social-media platform. Do you use Bluesky? Has it replaced Xitter? We want to hear from you. www.nature.com/articles/d41... #eXit

🎙️NEW PODCAST: Turning the tides on overfishing The London Stock Exchange podcast interviewed our CEO, Clare Brook to explore how we can turn the tide on overfishing and save our ocean. Listen wherever you get your podcasts👇 pod.link/sustainable/...

Ahead of the #WEF2025 in Davos next week I’ve checked out the @arcticbasecamp.bsky.social PolarRisk Name Generator. Here you can create your own Polar Risk name and learn more about what’s happening at the poles and how it affects all of us. Get your own name here: tinyurl.com/PolarRiskName 🧪🦑🦉🌊

If you love animal ecology then you’ll love this opportunity! Feel free to get in touch to discuss the ins and outs of the role

Thank God for Englishmen! And thanks also to the @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social for confirming this island's status as a bastion of climate sanity, despite appearances.

I made a starter pack of my fellow shark science and conservation professionals. There were about 350 of us on Twitter so we’ve got a ways to go, but many are here! Follow them and get more sharks in your feed, which I assume everyone wants. 🧪🌎🦑🦈 go.bsky.app/Q1x1gJB

❄️ Next week, I’ll be in Davos as Arctic Basecamp’s Scientist in Residence! ❄️ We'll be hosting briefings, sharing the latest climate science, and helping to ‘speak science to power.’ #ClimateAction #ArcticBasecamp #WEF2025 🧪🦑🦉

Around this time of the year, the peak of the melt season in #Antarctica is usually reached, but this year's spike in the total melt extent is exceptionally impressive! 🥵 (Source: nsidc.org/ice-sheets-t...)

Hello Bluesky! We are scientists from the #SeaIce and #Oceanography sections within the Research Department at the Norwegian Polar Institute, located in Tromsø, Norway. Follow us here on @bsky.app for updates and insights into polar #research in the #Arctic and #Antarctic carried out by us.

New paper! @jappliedecology.bsky.social https://bit.ly/3C5gYJp We mapped out the migrations of over 10K ind ⚫-tailed godwits (!) to characterize connectivity between sites in Europe and Africa. We compiled tracking data, ring recoveries and resightings: >400K records in total! (1/5)

Instead of listing my publications, as the year draws to an end, I want to shine the spotlight on the commonplace assumption that productivity must always increase. Good research is disruptive and thinking time is central to high quality scholarship and necessary for disruptive research.

This. 10000000%. I don't get much of this, really. And aside from a few exceptions, research has all felt superficial lately because that's what I have time/energy to complete. A sabbatical (which we don't have at the museum) would be so welcome. Alas.

One of my resolutions for 2025 will be to share more of the maps we make at Global Fishing Watch. Here is all vessel traffic from AIS across five years. And if you want a 50 megabyte file of this image where you can zoom in to really high resolution, go here: drive.google.com/file/d/1RgBQ...

Pleased to share a blog on one of my favourite papers I've worked on so far 🐳⚓️❄️ We asked, how do the various models we use compare, when we predict vessel collision risk for recovering whale populations? 🐳🗺 appliedecologistsblog.com/2024/11/21/c...

🐋 A humpback has made one of the longest #ocean migrations ever recorded, possibly driven by the #climatecrisis, scientists say The male #whale travelled +13,000km over the course of a few years. It was spotted off Colombia in 2017, then near Zanzibar in 2022! www.bbc.com/news/article...
