Like fuck they are

Blue Ghost, in orbit about 100km above the moon:

I'm sure there are more, but the two books current news makes me think of the most are The Sheep Look Up and Parable of the Talent/Sower.

there's an obvious and righteous case to make against neo-nazies, klan members, segregationists and conspiracy theorists, but that ground was abandoned by the demcrats/liberals a long time ago, and only weeds grow there now, so it is proving difficult.

Doomerism is a failure conditions, but it's not necessarily that to note that nothing seems off the table at the moment. It all can happen here, unless we act to prevent it.

Finally got around to watching the Comeback. Even by cringe comedy standards, a truly painful show to watch a lot of the time (because of how awkward every situation is). But a lovely and surprising ending I appreciated quite a bit.

what a tremendous new age for needlessly dying of the common flu.

I feel for people on the news side, but today's events do not really establish confidence in their impartiality.

is there a reasonable response other than boycotting WaPo at this point?

It's too bad no one in an elevated position seems to have an ethical structure that seems to think this is bad, or if they do a spine with which to support it.

We talked about Octavia E. Butler's brutal, prescient, scrupulously miserable 1993 novel Parable Of The Sower for the most recent Defector book club. She saw a future like ours very clearly, and it doesn't feel that great! defector.com/octavia-e-bu...

The thing I like about chappell's roan's Good Luck Babe is how well the music mimics the feeling of dizziness. It's very artfully done

I'm doing poorly on the "don't pay attention to the circus" promise, but partly just because it's so much worse than I expected. Feels like I need to keep an ear to the ground just for basic safety reasons at least. I might make an alt account for politics that I don't expect anyone to follow?

Smart Him of Intelligence and Thoughts thinks planes should fly straight or Something's Up. Skywise, a Conspiracy of Air.

genuinely still a little taken aback by the american urge to prostrate themselves in front of the biggest know-nothing they can find. They really get in there and lick boot, too.

For the entirety of my adult life I've seen Men of Pretty Good Intelligence take the stage, let it all go to their heads, and beclown themselves entirely within a few years, eventually muttering "beep boop penis chowder" to themselves while everyone nods thoughtfully. Good times.

I feel like "laughing like a jackass in the background of a morning radio show" has to be the easiest job in america.

Apple's doing this thing where it's trying to make me buy the dark frontier episodes of voyager, even though I have a paramount sub and I should be able to watch it for free. Shitty!

Boom, boom, boom. Are we paying the price for our hubris of science?

Some sunsetish pics tonight. It's a bird, it's a plane! Plus one from a walk back from a party the other night

Musk really in his Zorg era. We're all gonna get pink slips via vacuum tube.

As pointed out by someone else, you have to read this in this voice:

It's this but they're making a dystopia out of a perfectly fine society for no reason. Standing in a fully stocked grocery store going "I guess we have no choice but to kill and eat each other"

data is perfect and good so long as it says what I already believe is true. Wonderful that we've created a machine to ensure that outcome.

Good story here. slate.com/news-and-pol...

"god has a plan" is maybe the single most enraging response to "how do you explain what you did?" from a public servant. An appeal to the ineffable is not sufficient, sorry. You're going to have to actually account for your job performance.

These guys are so fucking stupid
