Sad ending for an amazing resource.

Another day testing the limits of resilience. The Alexandria NSF building was designed for the NSF merit review process (gold standard), complete with a floor devoted to panels. Now we aren’t allowed to have in person panels. The loss of US science leadership will haunt this country for decades.

Keep the pressure on, even if this is dropped from the reconciliation bill. Selling off our Crown Jewels is their goal. #PublicLands

HUD Secretary: " What's the worst possible way we can show the public that we actually couldn't care less about responsible government spending and fostering US science and innovation? AH! Displace NSF and build an executive suite with a personal gym!!!" *jumping high-fives all around*

The House narrowly approved legislation Thursday to eliminate the next two years of federal funding for public media outlets. The measure passed 214 to 212, with two Republican lawmakers switching their votes from "no" to "yes" to push it over the finish line.

Kevin Heatley, former Crater Lake leader, joined OPB’s “Think Out Loud” to explain why he started working there, how Trump directives affected the park, and why he decided to leave: "I cannot, in good conscience, manage an operation that I know is moving in the wrong direction."

Great team, some nice maps, and some new insights on forest structure throughout the coastal regions of BC and Southeast AK!

A great thread on the national treasure that is Forest Service research.

I made friends in Ohio this past weekend. Lots of friends.

This much needed commentary explains why forest carbon offsets programs are 🐂💩. "... carbon storage as a nature-based solution will merely serve as a feel-good action and a distraction from meaningful efforts to reduce fossil based carbon loading of the atmosphere" 🔥🧪🌏

Upcoming @uoregon.bsky.social seminar. 🌍🌲

What's the skinny from our new paper on forest carbon credits? They are of LOW quality! Our report outlines strategies to improve them @cleanaircatf.bsky.social 🌲🌍

This seems fine

Got to get out into Yosemite and sniff a Jeffrey pine this weekend (sniffed a lot of them honestly). Also met a new friend!

New paper alert -- Gavin Jones strikes again! Key findings: • Fire-driven complete loss of mature forest habitat in California is possible by 2100 under 'business as usual'. • Active forest restoration could slow or reverse trends of mature forest loss. 🧪🌍🔥

Crazy how long this conversation has been going on

Please check out our new review in BioScience! We describe how spatial climate analogs can be used in climate change research, impact assessment, decision-making, and communication. #MacroEcology #ClimateChange #GlobalChange 1/4

It looks like the Trump administration isn't going to wait for the FY26 budget to decimate the National Park Service and the USGS Ecosystems Mission Area. Thousands of job cuts (1,500 in NPS and 1,000 in USGS) are planned via reduction in force within 10 days. Who benefits from this? Not Americans.

Not seeing much here but the USFWS proposed a new rule that could limit the scope of the Endangered Species Act. We have until May 19th to provide public comments. Go to www.regulations.gov Search FWS-HQ-ES-2025-0034 (docket number for this rulemaking) Leave a comment and let your voice be heard

Agreed.

This article came out officially yesterday focused on supporting federal science to inform forest management: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... Thanks to @gcerullo.bsky.social for his efforts on this.

NPR, OPB, and KLCC are the most comprehensive and informative news source for both local, national and international news here in central Oregon. Let's be loud and make sure it stays that way.

Well done, @agu.org and @ametsoc.org. So grateful to our scientific societies for showing leadership when we need it most.

Scientists who study climate don't automatically attribute all changes to human activity. Rather, we carefully investigate every possible natural factor that could explain the planet's warming. Could these be the real culprits? The evidence is in--and the answer is NO. This thread explains! 🧵

NOAA's weather and climate prediction infrastructure provides critical forecasts for everything from hurricanes to wildfires to seasonal flood outlooks. Over 3,300 scientific experts call on Congress to stop the dismantling and illegal attacks. Read more from @ucsusa.bsky.social here:

The dismissal of National Climate Assessment authors this week and notice that its scope is being "reevaluated" leaves the door open to a compromised report serving fossil fuel interests at the cost of American communities. I talked to John Vause about this concern on CNN International last night.

Be good to see this still happen, regardless if it comes from the government. It wouldn’t be as impactful to US policy, but at least we would maintain accountability and a really great planning tool for future administrations and organizations that give a damn.

Well, it's official. We just received notice that all authors on the Sixth National Climate Assessment have just been released from their roles. The NCA is a vital, Congressionally mandated resource for our nation as we prepare for the impacts of climate change. This is a huge loss.

🔥🏔🌲 Interested in fire ecology & forests? Working in the Cascade Mountains? the Harvey Lab at UW-SEFS is hiring 6 full-time field assistants + 2 full-time field crew leads on projects exploring forest resilience to wildfire, reburns, & management. Application review begins May 2. Links below...

Writing about mature and old growth forests while sitting in line at GameStop for a Switch 2 preorder, like the good millennial I am.

Declaring it National Parks week while simultaneously removing the NPS ability to manage and maintain those National Parks comes across rather hollow.
