Academic job candidates, if you have ever landed a kickflip, definitely include that on your CV. m.youtube.com/watch?time_c...

Chimp Night at the Chimney Stack was a blast. More fun than a barrell of monkeys? Maybe not, but close.

Sleep with one ear open.

Another giant of cinema departs. Souleymane Cissé is best known for Yeelen (1987), which is a pretty magnificent film, but Baara (1978) is an absolute favourite. If one is interested in factory labour on screen, then one must, at some point, watch Baara and be awed.

Nemahsis! Live at the Danforth Music Hall. She is an absolute star. Great pop confections built with intelligence and ambition (touches of Kate Bush, Sineade, Lorde) performed with intensity and heart.

This should be fun! Will channel @benspky.bsky.social given all the chimp content.

The only thing "fit for a king" is a guillotine.

“I don’t know of a case where an organization has been more transparent than the DOGE organization” Musk said. We intend to fleece you and enrich ourselves.

I have been thinking about a Kracauer inspired project From Marvel to Musk about the rise of neofascism but then I’d have to watch all the Marvel films. The only way that may happen is if I take enough transatlantic flights.

What Trump and Musk are doing to the next generation of research / researchers in the states is unforgivably stupid and clearly intended to hobble the future of the country. For what purpose? To what end? It’s war on the future & quintessence of a “got mine, f y’all” attitude. Abolish billionaires.

Turns out the Wagenbach archive does have the full image after all. Sometimes you (ahem, I) have to go in a circle to get there.

Death of shame: I don't need to punish myself anymore than I already do, but somebody could set up a betting pool on the over/under of characters appearing in both the "fur is back" and "young conservatives love to party" stories in the NYTimes. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/s...

Dreamt last night I witnessed the origins of the turducken. Ducks were perching on turkeys who were perching on marble plinths.

A small sanity break: listening to Didi-Huberman's lecture "Les petits messagers de la tradition" and he is cracking himself up recounting a Tom and Jerry episode.

America is full of villains, fascists, conmen (often all three at once) but there’s also Scrim. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/17/u...

It’s been a while since we’ve had a decent blizzard in Toronto…
