A wonderful job opportunity @ucc.ie! #digitalhumanities

The year is 2435. Human beings — now sentient spheres of glowing gas — finally understand why matter exists. Our knowledge of the world is complete, and can go no farther! One the telepresence screen, a simulation of a 21c internet pundit pops up: "Told you deep learning was hitting a wall!"

The HEA has published Ten Considerations for Generative AI Adoption in Irish Higher Education, which provide a foundation for institutions to shape policies and practices around generative AI. hub.teachingandlearning.ie/ten-consider...

Where are all the literary datasets? open.substack.com/pub/jamescos... "Until something changes, distant reading will continue to be built not on openly available datasets, but on whispered exchanges and the quiet generosity of colleagues..." #digitalhumanities

I've written a short piece on Michael Longley - less an obituary than an appreciation. booksirelandmagazine.com/as-long-as-t... Pictures: Portrait by Colin Davidson in the National Gallery of Ireland; with Seamus Heaney on the Hill of Tara in 2010.

The whole #DeepSeek “oh wow, gaming GPUs are now good for AI development” is a stale take! Ampere / Ada Lovelace architectures support CUDA & Tensor Cores & have always been capable of accelerating AI & deep learning tasks (though VRAM / thermal design are issues). And they can do all the fun stuff.

So everyone is shorting $NVDA right? Right?

Just three women in the new Irish cabinet. A sorry state of affairs for 2025.

UCC Quad shrouded in an early morning mist. What a lovely way to start the day

This year’s CES was next level. I consider myself a pretty “show me the tech” kind of guy, but what’ll soon be available to consumers is getting scary. Gadgets from science fiction are finally being realised. We’re not at all prepared for some of this shit. Not even close.

A lot of #mla25 panelists serving on crisis in hum funding RT made pleas to figure out how to do storytelling for the gen public abt the humanities. @alanyliu.bsky.social clued me into a new project on this very topic center-humanities-communication.org Super interesting!

Whatever one’s position on #genAI and how it might or might not transform our world for better or worse, there is a frequently overlooked factor that could undermine, even stall, any march towards our bright or bleak #AI futures—energy. open.substack.com/pub/jamescos...

Want to amplify the story below as the correct way to think about LLM 'personalities', as opposed to the scifi nonsense about deceptive agents that still floats around. And to take the opportunity to link to this old post of mine, which makes a similar point. benschmidt.org/post/2023-02...

“One provider, Novel BottleWorks, which is based near Victoria Cross, across from the Kingsley Hotel, charges up to €450 per week for an en-suite bedroom/bathroom. The same company offers full board for €900 per month in its student accommodation in Pamplona in Spain.” 🫠🫠

Warmest thanks to @roopikarisam.bsky.social, @jenguiliano.bsky.social, each of the reviewers, and (particularly) Stacy Reardon for all their work on this issue. Astrid and myself had very little heavy lifting to do; #ReviewsInDH is an incredibly well-oiled machine! 👏👏 #DigitalHumanities
