Tomorrow night I'm flying to Copenhagen to visit GBIF and hopefully The Globe, then next week I'll be in Cambridge for a 4 day long IUCN workshop. If anybody here reads this, happy to catch up :)

I am saddened by this news. Atul was a vibrant colleague and tireless proponent of using data to unravel the complexity of disease.

Today in Nature we report a systematic strategy to activate & identify gene sets in plants. We identify 8 new genes from the yew tree's Taxol biosynthetic pathway, enabling us to engineer tobacco with 17- & 20-gene pathways to Taxol precursors baccatin III & deBz-deoxy-Taxol #SingleCell #secmet 🧬🧪🌾

1/10 New pre-print(s) from the Sternberg Lab in collaboration with Leifu Chang's Lab! We uncover the unprecedented molecular mechanism of CRISPR-Cas12f-like proteins, which drive RNA-guided transcription independently of canonical promoter motifs. Full story here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

#plantsci Random question for Arabidopsis people: has anyone compared the impact of selfing A.thaliana in labs over successive generations vs maintaining the same ecotype in wild environments (low level of outcrossing), on inbreeding depression? @plantevolution.bsky.social

💯 Rubber bullets can act like regular bullets at that range. The cop deliberately targeted and fired on a person who is obviously a journalist doing a TV report. #CopsDoingCrimesOnCamera

I’ve been studying gene regulation in primates for over 20 years, and using RNA-seq since 2008 to compare expression across species. We thought we were being careful. We used curated orthologous exons to minimize alignment bias and focused on biologically meaningful comparisons. We were wrong.

No update from ARC about ongoing Linkage Projects & Laureate Fellowships delays. On 29th May, ARC told @jsresearchpro.bsky.social they couldn’t "provide further detail”👇 Remember, they told us to wait for an update a month ago. Nothing since. Seems so out of touch. Just explain what's happening!

New on @biorxiv!!!!!! We’re excited to share our latest paper on combining cell-free systems and machine learning to express full genome in vitro. Check it out now! 👉 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Catch us at SEED in Houston this June to discuss this work. #CellFree

I repeat: nanopore accuracy is a software problem, not a chemistry problem or a hardware problem.

I often send a little e-mail congratulating the corresponding author of a paper I really enjoyed reading. It's simple, quick and I think it's always nice to receive a positive message.
