Lindsey is right that it's important to remember that the bigots trying to take away rights from transgender people are weird losers.

If you enjoy my Bluesky bullshit, come on out to see it live! I'm a co-writer of "Now That's What I Call F-ck It," a new sketch comedy show happening every Friday night in March at 9 at The Second City in Chicago. Get your tickets now:

Just found out the leotard is named after an actual guy, and it’s giving me real “John Backflip” vibes.

In (what feels like) week six of watching “My Fair Lady.” Henry Higgins’ character has not improved. I am dreading the inevitable turn to romance.

My favorite part about cutting mangos is eating the remaining fruit around the pit like a cheeky little monkey.

I didn’t go to the best high school, but I can tell you that Henry Higgins would have been allowed to call some girl “a bilious pigeon” exactly once.

LCD Soundsystem's debut album turns 20 today so throwback to the time I made Stephen Malkmus listen to it for the first time. www.vice.com/en/article/s...

“The Köln Concert,” some of my favorite music ever recorded, was performed 50 years ago today. I wrote about it once, for a website that tragically no longer exists. deadspin.com/kind-of-weir...

Cannot say enough about how good the Martian series of Revolutions is. The latest is propulsive, cinematic, staggering, and charged with possibility podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/r...

Wonderful “overlooked obituary” from the New York Times about a cartographer who developed an atlas of Middle Earth. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/13/o...

Yaa Gyasi's "Transcendent Kingdom" offered a beautiful, painful look at the impact of addiction on families. It captures the "good kid" surrounded by addiction, one with the heartbreaking sense that they can save everything by being perfect. www.jamesseidler.com/book-review-...

Do you think an intern in the Catholic Church has ever been assigned to knock together a few thoughts on “robot Jesus”?

I forced my children to watch half of the 1951 version of “King of Kings” tonight, which has been the extent of their religious instruction to date. … High Windows

Got a used CD of “As Good as Dead” yesterday, so I’ve been cruising around the Region like a real High-Fiving MF.

Got my annual bloodwork (as basically required by my employer), but they coded it wrong, so I’m spending 40 minutes on the phone disputing a $250 bill. I am grateful *someone* is watching out for unnecessary services.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

Attaching Dungeons and Dragons stamps to sympathy cards is a real bummer. This drow swashbuckler is…sorry for your loss, I guess?

I just spent 40 minutes trying to untangle “net style” lights, which seems like the kind of task you’d give Bruce Banner if you wanted to confirm the Gamma radiation was really out of his system.

Top 0.5% listener for Dan Deacon—I’ll take it!

Just finished watching Notre Dame-Creighton on the treadmill—trying to really max out how punishing I can make my workout.

I’m not buying that Cooper Rush isn’t Andy Dalton.

Sad to read about bands who seem to be "making it" but are still broke and scrambling. It's probably a good thing my artistic ambitions never gained much traction.

Hey, remember that really stupid idea I had a few weeks back? A six-and-a-half-hour supercut of live "Marquee Moon" solos? I finished it and wrote about it here.

Cormac McCarthy is my birthday twin and one of my favorite novelists, but both his writing and his personal biography suggest he could be a selfish, irresponsible man. This profile is illuminating and damning but sounds sort of BSey too. I wish it included more sources.

Apparently Civ 5 has a “retire” button that lets you quit at any point (say, at turn 53/500), making it impossible to win even if you keep playing for *hours* afterward. Ask me how I know. 😭
