Lovely evening light from Birkrigg Common this evening 😊

As it’s my birthday I took the afternoon off for a bike ride :-)

I’m deeply saddened by the evidence emerging from the Ida Lock inquest. It’s clear that the lessons from the Morecambe Bay Investigation were not fully heeded at the time—utterly unacceptable. My heart goes out to Ida’s family & my deepest sympathies are with them.

47 tomorrow…. feels like a number that’s much bigger than it should be🙈

A lovely Sunday enjoying the good weather & eating too much 😂

A few thoughts on improving maternity safety a decade after the publication of Morecambe Bay Investigation report. patientsafetyfirst.wordpress.com/2025/03/08/t...

“The process has been exhausting & dehumanising. It became apparent to us quite quickly how easy it is for institutions to reduce people to case numbers and paperwork, to drag things out so long that families are left feeling powerless…” www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpo...

A lovely spring morning in Cumbria :-)

Throughout my anaesthetic training, the obstetric component was the worst part. Because the approach to risk management was unbearable.

Well, that was a much needed weekend of whisky, music, cycling, walks in the dark and generally having a bit of fun. After some recent wobbles - also grateful for conversations with good friends which have re-energised me a bit. Wishing everyone a good week ahead 😊

Maximum dad points scored for today’s Sunday Roast effort…

A fun local bike ride with a friend… spring is definitely on the way 😊

Deep breaths for tomorrow Shaun…. No doubt it will be difficult reading.

I honestly didn't think it could get worse, but tomorrow The Sunday Times reports on the latest horrifying revelations about poor maternity care at Nottingham hospitals. Big questions continue to be asked about #maternitysafety nationally, 10 years on from the Morecambe Bay report.

Lovely walk around Roudsea nature reserve with my youngest :-)

Monday is the 10th anniversary of the publication of the Morecambe Bay Investigation. There have been areas of national progress since - but sadly so many of the key messages & recommendations of the report remain valid today. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a7f3d...

What a difference a bit of sunshine and blue sky makes! 😊

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Patient Safety have written a submission making recommendations to ensure patient safety is at the heart of the 10 year plan for the NHS. The full submission is available here:- #patientsafety static1.squarespace.com/static/5dc54ed…

My dad had a heart attack on 8th Jan. After 6 weeks in hospital, heart bypass surgery, an emergency readmission to theatre due to bleeding, 8 days in intensive care & a further week recovering - he is finally being discharged tomorrow. Will be forever grateful to the NHS for saving his life 🙏

Dad continues to recover well… and thanks to the NHS - will hopefully be home in a few days 🙏 Time for a 🍺 or 🍻! Happy Friday folks 😊

En route to Westminster for a #PatientSafety APPG meeting…

FFS…. 🤦

My dad has his bypass operation on Monday. Unfortunately he had to be readmitted to theatre yesterday due to bleeding around the heart - but he is now currently stable & we have everything crossed for his continued recovery over the days ahead. 🙏

Still feeling grotty with flu - an early night watching Gladiator 2 and drinking peppermint tea it is 🤧

Had an awful week with flu & my dad’s scheduled heart op being cancelled at late notice on Wednesday due to lack of ICU capacity - a stressful time! Now rescheduled for Monday 🙏

The NHS planning guidance - it's marching orders for the year - is out. More than a dozen national priorities have been dropped and the NHS faces more spending cuts. As many in the NHS know, what matters is what is counted. Read the guidance here: www.england.nhs.uk/operational-...

“We urgently need a central system that catalogues and prioritises recommendations from not just inquiries, but coroners, HSSIB, the Care Quality Commission, and royal colleges so that trusts know precisely what they are expected to deliver and by when.”

Any good film recommendations folks?

Tarn Hows today ❄️ ❤️

My dad had a heart attack yesterday. The ambulance came within 30 minutes & he received good care at Furness General & was then transferred to Blackpool where he is stable & on a waiting list for a bypass operation. No doubt at all that the NHS saved his life. Keeping everything crossed. 🙏

Managed to squeeze in a quick lunch time walk around Birkrigg common today 😊

Snow, you were fun today - now hurry and melt as I've got stuff to do tomorrow 😂

It’s served #SundayRoast

The kids have made an abominable snowman! 😂 ⛄️

Good morning from a snowy Cumbria ❄️ 🐈

Stocking up with a big pan of homemade chilli to get through the cold weekend ahead. 😊 🌶️

A rubbish iPhone shot - but shows how bright Venus is next to the moon tonight… go and have a look!

A lovely frosty morning in Cumbria… back to #patientsafety work today… Hoping 2025 is a year where we make important & much needed progress.

A nice New Year’s Day walk to Ulverston with the girls - and the best Steak & Ale pie I’ve ever had in the Rose & Crown… Back to work & the real world again tomorrow 😊

Feels like the right time to open one of the good bottles…

My daughter and I flew with Jeju Air (in one of the airlines B737-800 planes) from Seoul to Hanoi back in August. Shocked and saddened by the horrific crash in Muan yesterday 😢

“The health ministry has… planned to offer professional counselling to the injured & family members…” “….we ask that officials transparently disclose the accident investigation process and promptly inform the bereaved families” www.independent.co.uk/asia/east-as...
