👇🎯 I was very early here but also tried Mastodon, stayed on Twitter longer than Jacob bc certain prof. networks (esp. 🇪🇺/🇬🇧 based scholars, policy folks, & journalists) were still there, left here for a bit post-10/7/23 bc the antisemitism here was awful, & came back & now find Bluesky useful. But 👇💯

One odd thing about Twitter/ Bluesky discourse from my perspective is… I didn’t leave Twitter for Bluesky. I left twitter. Then well over a year later, there was Bluesky, and I joined it. (In between, tried Threads and Mastadon.) If Bluesky disappeared tomorrow I wouldn’t go back to Twitter.

Maybe Happy Ending made my heart so happy. I am so glad to have seen it. If you are in New York- or if comes to your city when their tour launches next year- go see it. It is joy and love.

@j9love.bsky.social and I published our ungrading article with JSEPA and had a great experience.

In honor of Ryan Coogler's masterful film Sinners going on sale to rent or buy digitally today, here's my Substack on how the film's creative showcase of Black and non-white cultures is the argument for diversity, equity and inclusion Hollywood needs. loom.ly/UxXM3vs

When we talk about antisemitism, most of the discussion is about motivations. Let's talk about effects. The most productive way to think about it is imo in terms of an attack on Jews' civil rights: exclusion, discrimination, violence on the rights to equal access to civic life and public space. 1/

The relationship that the Jewish community has to the State of Israel is more fraught than people outside our community know.

This has been a heavy day for many reasons, so I am going to say goodnight with a timeline cleanse- my view of Ghost from my yoga mat this morning.

Would really appreciate if Twitter's antisemites would make up their minds over whether Jews should all go to Israel or get out of Israel. The entire worldview seems undertheorized, feels like they need to sit down and hash out the basics at a meeting of the Elders of Anti-Zion.

So the event was held at a Jewish Museum, was intended for Jewish Attendees (not Israelis), and was led by an interfaith coalition supporting refugees (including in Gaza). This was unquestionably an antisemitic hate crime.

Also true of when people go out of their way to silence protest/speech on campus that takes pains to focus on Israel/not conflate the state with Jews. Some think “if we call all protest extreme antisemitic speech, we’ll end the speech!” No. You’ll get more extreme and even antisemitic speech.

I would have gone much farther at a much earlier date, but I do think we've crossed some sort of line when the President Emeritus of the Union for Reform Judaism, the largest formal Jewish denomination in the US, is calling Israel's war "inhumane." www.haaretz.com/opinion/2025...

Always good when the state empowers someone to decide who is and isn't a "real Jew"

Working on a paper and raging about citation politics (h/t @maxliboiron.bsky.social). I refuse to cut citations for word count purposes (especially for an online journal). Hoping I can lobby the editors because the citations are ~1/4 of the words, and each deserves to be included. #AcademicSky

Meanwhile, if Trump actually does pivot away from Israel in the Middle East, the domestic swerve on antisemiticism will get very ugly very fast, in ways that will take all the pleasure out of seeing post-leopard Horowitz, Slotkin, Weiss and Ackman.

“Dozens of groups joined the task force, but an ‘overwhelming number’ had something in common, Mr. Carafano said during a Jan. 2024 meeting: They weren’t Jewish. A short list of initial members that Heritage posted online consisted mainly of conservative and Christian organizations.”

people need to internalize, very quickly, that federal research grants are a hypercompetitive contracting process not charity, and that what Uncle Sam gets in return for that money is American dominance in the future

Before everyone goes into conspiracy theories, here is the occam's razor reason.

Important context for why the EBU might be keeping Israel in Eurovision, thus incentivizing the protection of KAN (the Israeli EBU member) as a free press. BIbi has threatened KAN before, but values Eurovision participation more. No Eurovision=no reason to keep from taking over the medium.

Made it to Convocation. Train home already delayed at least an hour

Loving how there are no NJ Transit trains and Amtrak still manages to be delayed on these here tracks. Will I make it to Convocation?

NYU Wagner convocation is today. As soon as I heard about the potential NJ Transit strike I got Amtrak tickets (I'm lucky thue an option at my station). This empty parking lot is wild. I don't get this close to the front when I get here by 6:15 am, let alone 11:30 am.

I think the position that Israel should not be allowed to perform in Eurovision is completely reasonable and fine as a position. The conspiracy theories about the Israeli performers are not.

Every thing I love is under attack.

"The Harvard report on antisemitism + anti-Israel bias claims to document a crisis of antisemitism on campus. But what it actually reveals is Harvard’s willingness to redefine Jewish identity in ideological terms: to exclude + erase Jews who dissent from Zionism. I know this b/c I am one of them."
