US Science has been under sustained attack for the last month. I've been thinking about the vulnerabilities in UK science. In a new post, I've imagined a dystopian but *possible* future for UK science - as a way for prompting discussions on how we can protect it. open.substack.com/pub/christin...

Know your history.

We're getting dangerously close to 50% of Trump supporters saying they want a strong leader who does not have to bother with Congress OR ELECTIONS! There is no sugar-coating what to call that.

Why Labour and Trump will both fail www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCnI...

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

🧵Who is opposing the Trump administration? I analysed 76 actions of the administration since inauguration and then searched for *meaningful* opposition to each. I grouped the types of opposition and considered what we can learn from both them & actions where opposition has been lacking 1/24

I am hiring: PhD students, postdocs, admin personnel. Email me if you know somebody that may be interested in joining us in Cologne! 👇👇 Please RT for reach! 🙏🙏

Mass redundancies in Dutch universities are not only the direct consequence of short-sighted austerity policy but also a strategy to reduce the influence of potentially critical voices backed by sound knowledge: academics will keep quiet while they're struggling to keep their job or find new a one.

Most of those points are probably true for every single "revelation" by the code kiddies that is amplified by Musk.

If any of my esteemed author colleagues thought that they were only gonna ban stuff with sex or LGBTQ themes…actually, if you thought that you probably don’t follow me anyway. Heh.

The Netherlands is now coming for HE possibly even more brutally than the UK - entire research groups summarily fired (from one day to the next during term!) at Twente. Researching nanotech no less! Here again the increasingly less rare combo of worrying and stupid: www.utoday.nl/news/75196/d...

How Dunning-Kruger works... and travels.

If you've ever used the Polity data, read this from Monty Marshall. tl;dr Polity is coding recent US events as an executive self-coup and an adverse regime change.

Grimly brilliant.

New: We spoke to government IT employees/contractors about DOGE. Their warnings were dire. The people who maintain the systems that keep the country working are terrified. "This is the largest data breach and the largest IT security breach in our country’s history—at least that’s publicly known."

ALL OF THIS. Trump and Musk “are trying to instantiate an anti-constitutional theory of executive power that would make the president supreme over all other branches of government.…And the longer Congress stands by, the more this is fixed in place.” @jamellebouie.net www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

This is not just breaking a taboo on a day where the Bundestag was supposed to remember the Holocaust, it will backfire for the Conservatives as the pandering to the far right has backfired for the Tories in Britain. A huge victory for the AfD. A dark day for Germany. Why do people never learn.

A simple warning about Musk from people at Tesla. “Wear the right clothes, do not make suggestions and be sure to gauge his mood before you meet him…. Do not to wear any patterned clothing, suede shoes or fragrance. Such attire, they said, could send Musk into a rage.” apple.news/A52ofrnY2QmW...

My very last issue (on ♿️) has now come out with BMJ Medical Humanities: I have stepped down from my role as Editor in Chief. There are a lot of factors—after 17 years editing two consecutive journals, it was time. But there’s more, and I feel we should talk about the climate of #academic publishing

(Thread)

A thoughtful piece on AI and education from @emollick.bsky.social "The integration of AI in education is not a future possibility—it's our present reality... It requires a fundamental reimagining of how we teach, learn, and assess knowledge." www.oneusefulthing.org/p/post-apoca...

2024 daily temperatures compared to past years. A frightening graphic from the BBC. #ClimateEmergency

I wish universities would 'start to ask questions' about how many academic 'leadership' roles they can afford! The proliferation of vice/deputy/pro/associate 'leadership roles' over the last 10-20 years has been quite extraordinary.

57 companies are responsible for 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 2016. These companies include fossil fuel giants like Chevron, Shell, and BP, who have been raking in record profits. The profits of Big Oil should not be more important than the future of our planet.

I see three distinct phases. Pre-Fox, when opinion was diverse but actual facts were indisputable. Fox/Trump, where objective truth was subjected to the false equivalence of ‘alternative facts’ (ie lies). And now, where media & tech platform owners collude with him to drown out the truth altogether.

I began making a starter pack for Experimental Philosophers. But then I wondered, “Is there already an #xPhi starter pack?” If this is the first, then let’s fill out the list of all the people I’m missing. Recommendations and self-nominations welcome! go.bsky.app/ombTiW

The insanity of being a fire ecologist in the epicenter of a major fire event, bags packed and ready to evacuate, watching active fire from my window, while taking media requests and explaining to the public, for the 100,000th time how climate change is largely responsible for this

Since January 1st, we have had attacks that have used several new technologies and novel implementation methods. New Orleans: Used Meta Glasses for recon, Turo to book a vehicle (used peer-to-peer sharing for book lodging and weapon of attack), used and EV.
