you don't need chatGPT i am perfectly capable of drinking a bottle of water and lying to you

Yesterday I was at an all day IFLA event at York U. A librarian from Norway, Mariann Schjeide, who was there repping FAIFE and facilitating a panel unwittingly absolutely DESTROYED the notion of libraries as neutral institutions in the blink of an eye. I actually squealed with glee. 10/10 no notes.

Genuinely unbelievable how blatant the ongoing trans rights scandal is in the UK

MPOW is rolling out Gemini on our campus. I just tried it out with a prompt fairly representative of a typical essay assigned to one of my departments. On the bright side, it did a TERRIBLE job. On the down side, it did a TERRIBLE job and students will still use it.

In the authoritarian year of 2025, I desperately want adults to be okay with me or anyone else not enjoying something that they enjoy. Amen.

A theme that I brought home from ACRL was to focus on relationships and community right now; to celebrate the smaller moments. I just had a research consult w/ a student and her face lit up as we found articles relevant to her topic. Her smile had wattage! We stopped for a moment to enjoy that. 💡

I can only imagine the bailout package they are drawing up for themselves. As the saying goes, privatize the profits, and socialize the losses.

Closing keynote at #acrl25 with @theferocity.bsky.social asking us how our hangovers are… not his first time speaking to librarians. 😂🙃

Here’s the thing about all the advice I’m reading about crossing the border. I just don’t have a burner phone kicking around?!?! (please don’t give me more advice… I’m good on that front)

This reminds me of the infinite wisdom of @baharaky.bsky.social pointing out that using the wifi sponsored by Elsevier while listening to Lawrence Lessig talk about Aaron Swartz was kind of fucked up. Just bought myself an eSIM so that I don't have to avail myself of the "free" wifi.

Just got around to updating StoryGraph after finishing Carol Off’s latest. Struck by the number of reviews that basically say “we are all so fucked and this book tells you exactly why and how it happened.” Definitely recommended reading to understand These Times app.thestorygraph.com/books/5c39ed...

Yes, hello librarians out there. I just helped a student who was (correctly) using a very fancy Boolean search in a database but she wasn’t finding what she needed. I got her to switch up to using four keywords (no operators) in library discovery layer. 💥 Sorted. Please, start with simple.

The Special Libraries Association announces dissolution. 📚 sla.org/news/697073/...

Does anyone know what the future of ERIC will be? I presume it would also be a casualty of Dept of Education’s closure? Just looking for the folks who are talking about this! 📚

What stage of capitalism is this now?

everyone should listen to this in its entirety but journalists should listen to it multiple times. this is how you ask questions. you just keep asking simple, easily answerable stuff and the evasiveness becomes that much more glaring

I will never be one of the elders that has to be told by younger people to exit stage left. It's important to cede the stage & to do so with grace. Go do other work. [stay out of my mentions about ageism]

Maybe I'm just hormonal or overwhelmed by ~the world~ (or both?) but this just made me cry a little bit.

Apple and Costco are two organizations that get most of my disposable money. Insofar as I will ever root for capitalism, this is the kind I will gladly cheer on.

My tiny act of resistance this morning was flipping off the cyber truck I saw out in the wild today. They are a rare sight ‘round these parts, thank goodness. No bigger Asshole flag out there.

Weird how not a single one of the newspapers and magazines that have been breathlessly churning out "cancel culture" thinkpieces for the past four years have managed to use the word "censorship" at all to describe the most rapid and comprehensive campaign of mass-censorship in recent US history.

Sick of people calling everything in crypto a Ponzi scheme. Some crypto projects are pump and dump schemes, while others are pyramid schemes. Others are just standard issue fraud. Others are just middlemen skimming off the top. Stop glossing over the diversity in the industry.

PLSN gets a lot of letters asking for info about Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh stuff. I came across one that I thought would be perfect for my 13yo kid - with his storehouse of detailed Pokemon knowledge - to answer. He’s working away at it now. Perfect use of idle teenage time.

I feel sick.
