Another #seagullSunday at the Shrewsbury gullery saw counts of 67 LBBG chicks from 33 checked nests, and a whopping 10 Herring chicks from 6 nests. 16 LBBG and 2 HG nests still sitting #urbangulls #seabirdscount #shropshirebirding #superseabirdSunday

VP WeBS count from 0630 - returning ad Green Sand good to see and nfy for me, but the highlight was a brood of 8 small young Shoveler, which haven't bred here for quite a few years. 4 L Egret, Shelduck w 9 young, 3 LRP, 3 Oysterc, male Teal, 5 Gadwall etc #shropshirebirding #RBBP #ukwildlife

What is it with Quails and gales?! Another windy one last night at #salopobs as this singing Quail flew over and the sound faded away. It or another was recorded distantly 30mins later #nocmig 🪶🔊

Checked on the #Shrewsbury gullery this evening and it was a chickfest. Downy bundles all over the place 🐥 #urbangulls #seabirdscount #shropshirebirding

“AviList – a brand-new, unified global checklist of bird species and taxonomy – has been published today.” “This new checklist brings together global thinking on what constitutes a species and shakes up our understanding of the avian world.” #Ornithology

You may need to squint a little, but this is a very distant Osprey on the local patch at Crose Mere in North Shropshire! I rarely see Ospreys but this is my third in three weeks and my second self-found in that time. It's a serendipity thing... #ShropshireBirding

I'm in the chair for Wednesday's FREE Curlew webinar from @curlewaction.bsky.social. ** Tracking Curlews ** www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/webinar-tr... More info about tracking waders/shorebirds ⬇️ wadertales.wordpress.com/2025/05/06/m... #ornithology

💥Gannet!💥 Garden ✅️ 💥149💥 looked a little incongruous sailing SSW through the sunny Shropshire sky on a light westerly at 0817! What next?! The first Grey Wag and Little Egret of the #salopobs autumn added to the 53spp total 😎

A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius. This is one of my favorite @waterbirdsociety.bsky.social papers I've ever handled as managing editor #ornithology

It rained! Muddy puddles gratefully received by these furry-footed wonders today #housemartins #mudgloriousmud

Is there a more mysterious bird in the UK? On a stunning night in Staffordshire we ringed a new male Nightjar, which was one of 2 birds present. A Thermal imager really helped us monitor the nets, keep the birds safe and capture some great footage. #secretlives

Thermal imagers allow us to capture natural footage of species you often can’t see, as they are most active at night. We were lucky enough to get this incredible thermal footage of a Nightjar last night. They love paths! Thermal reduces disturbance and time in the field.

1st time visiting @btobirds.bsky.social BirdFacts pages in a few weeks, must say "well done BTO" on your updated layout, so much clearer to my old eyes. I'll certainly be lingering longer, reading wealth of info in each individual species a/c, e.g today's click www.bto.org/learn/about-.... 👏

A single Norfolk Hawker was flying yesterday over the dipping platorm at Slapton Ley NNR. They now seem to be firmly established at Slapton. It was blowing over 30mph and the Hawker was elusive so I have used photos from '23 and '24.

Teifi Ringing Group latest blog with news from the Teifi Marshes reed beds and movements of our birds including a Woodcock to Russia, Sedge Warblers from France and Jersey and a wandering Bullfinch from Llangorse Lake #birdringing #birdingwales teifimarshbirds.blogspot.com/2025/05/reco...

"It is a tactic worthy of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt: wait until a beeping pedestrian crossing indicates a traffic queue has formed then use the line of cars as cover to reach your target. But this isn’t a scene from Mission: Impossible – it’s the behaviour of a young hawk."

#salopobs tick 💥148💥 kicked off the day in style: a lanky pair of Great Crested Grebes! Then we managed to track down the endless gull flight to a huge silage clamp where a 2cy #CaspianGull and 2cy YLG joined 380 LBBGs on the breeze 🪶😎

Guest blog post! Amy Robjohns has written a lovely blog post about her #patchbirding at Titchfield Haven, which is located on the Solent. To read it, follow the link: patchworkchallenge.blogspot.com

New for 2025, there's now a livestream from the Tern & Gull colony in Langstone Harbour from the RSPB reserve 🐥👀 The view shows part of the Sandwich Tern & Black-headed Gull colonies. Chick should hatching any day now... 1/ #SuperSeabirdSunday www.youtube.com/live/MB2DSJm...

@mrhenrymorris.bsky.social #scottishbirding This is an important cause with you—it's about training detection dogs to help stop wildlife crime against Hen Harriers and other birds of prey in the UK. Please consider supporting this or share it with others who might be interested.

There are now *two* Corn Buntings singing in the rain beside the "bunting barley" on the home patch near Ellesmere, for the first time in ten or more years. Small victories... Four Shelduck, four Coot and two Oystercatchers on the field pool, later joined by two Egyptian Geese. #ShropshireBirding

From the plane to the car park to the scope - locating, confirming and identifying more incubating gulls in the Shrewsbury gullery on another #seagullSunday. 62 LBBG and 7 Herring nests so far... #urbangulls #seabirdscount #shropshirebirding

I despair. A £35 Swift brick is too much of an imposition for an industry that causes lots of environmental harm and makes £ billions in profit. A disgraceful lack of ambition from a young government with a large majority that seems to live in fear of the Daily Mail comments section.

An unusual bird-related news story, presumably about a Mute Swan or feral goose. #ShropshireBirding
