๐ŸŽ™๏ธ New podcast drop: WTF Now? by S7 is live! Iโ€™m guest no 1 (no pressure ๐Ÿ˜…) talking about: โšก Just how wasteful is our system? ๐Ÿ’ธ Are renewables really driving up bills? ๐ŸŒ What Chinaโ€™s doing โ€” & why Europe needs to catch up. GOOD NEWS: 41% of global electricity is now from renewable energy sources or nuclear as Emberโ€™s global electricity review shows.

๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ EVs are holding up better than combustion cars, says ADAC. In 2024, ICE cars aged 2โ€“4 years were 2.5x more likely to break down than EVs. EVs on the road โ†‘ 97% EV breakdowns โ†‘ only 46%

When I was eight years old I founded an environmental group in my hometown. Today I work on clean energy policy globally. I was interviewed on my journey by Philipp Ritzinger. www.linkedin.com/pulse/lifelo...

Most households could at least afford an electric induction hob as there are portable ones starting at about ยฃ30. Air-to-air heat pumps (which can act as air cons) are also relatively cheap (starting at about ยฃ400) and easy to install, perhaps to use in one key room?

This is why I do all the heat pump advocacy. We know how to fix most air pollution, we just need to get on and do it.

20 years ago almost a quarter of Finland's electricity came from coal. This week Finland's last active coal-fired power and heat plant shut down. www.reuters.com/business/ene...

How Tesla is losing market share and fast. BYD overtook Tesla recently. What do you think? Will Tesla ever recover?

FLEXIBILITY FOR ALL: Since Apr 1 2025, all distribution network operators in Germany are required to offer variable grid fees for controllable consumers (think heat pumps, EVs, batteries). Animation illustrates this for a typical day. Red: high tariffs Blue: low tariffs ๐Ÿงต

Battery electric vehicles are unstoppable now. In these countries BEVs make up more than 1/5 of sales over last 12 months. Numbers will keep going up: Norway 90% Denmark 54% Netherlands 37% Sweden 35% Belgium 31% Finland 31% China 29% Luxembourg 29% Portugal 21% United Kingdom 20% Switzerland 20%

It's a myth that "hydrogen combustion produces only water vapour". Burning hydrogen results in harmful NOx emissions. In urban areas this becomes the dominant source of NOx pollution if we switched to hydrogen for heating. Shocking to see H2Heat project financed by the EU peddling such untruths ๐Ÿ‘‡

Numbers are in: Teslaโ€™s deliveries tumbled in first 3 months of this year, marking its worst quarter since 2022, as the electric-vehicle maker faced a consumer backlash in Europe, fierce competition in China and a delayed revamp of its flagship model. Note that this is despite growing EV market.

One of several myths and legends that frequently get repeated.

๐Ÿšจ NEW RESEARCH: Gas boilers now produce ~72% of NOx emissions in central London. Switching from gas to hydrogen for heating could cost ยฃ600M in extra environmental damage vs. heat pumps. Time to rethink urban air pollution priorities. ๐Ÿ“„ Read more: pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

Yesterday the UK's Clean Heat Market Mechanism launched. The UK is the first country in the world setting clean heat standards for heating appliance manufacturers. It is a policy that if implemented well could be the key to scaling clean heating solutions. www.installeronline.co.uk/green-energy...

This is what happens with gas grid fees if regulation is not reformed: - UK: 10x more in 20 years - Austria: 4x more by 2040 - Germany: 5x more by 2050 - France: 3x more by 2050 More in paper with @ckemfert.bsky.social @richardlowes.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Electricity demand increased by 4.3% in 2024, up from 2.5% in 2023, according to the latest data published @iea.org. The surge was linked to exceptional heat, the electrification of transport, buildings and industry, as well as the expansion of data centres. www.ft.com/content/a9b2...

The new German government considers abolishing the law because it is allegedly not "technologically open". I was asked by a journalist which technology was missing. All I could think of was a small modular reactor to heat large blocks of flats. ๐Ÿงต
