This last week is a real demonstration of how capacious, yet flattened the word "violent" is in our political discourse. Political assassinations are obviously, clearly violent. But the same word has been used all week to describe protestors damaging objects--not people, objects.

I’ve been very intentional about listening/buying new music in the past year and I must say that Boldy James has grown on me a lot in the past few months. Guy is just an incredible hip hop artist and I’m digging his recent-ish approach of working with a single producer for each album he puts out.

New Lazzarato arrived in the mail today. Right up there with RanciĆØre with my favorite current writer/thinker of our contemporary period.

ā€œToday their legacies demonstrate the imperative of organic intellectuals to confront authoritarian nationalism and forge global solidarity.ā€ @jordantcamp.bsky.social introduces a previously unpublished 1974 speech by Stuart Hall on Walter Rodney, who was assassinated 45 years ago tomorrow:

On June 13, 1980 radical historian & political theorist Walter Rodney was assassinated. To honor his life & legacy I worked w/ @bostonreview.bsky.social to publish Stuart Hall's previously unpublished 1974 speech in support of Rodney. Rodney and Hall speak to our conjuncture w/ remarkable clarity.

Neoliberalism, like many extensions of capitalist ideology, is contradictory in that it both needs the State to facilitate its policies but chafes at limitations the State imposes on the flow of capital. That being said, it is very comfortable embracing Fascism and is not failing—it is thriving.

Today is the day the NEH has been fully dismantled in all but name.

Bit of an impulse buy from @dukepress.bsky.social but how can anyone resist a book that is, in part, about ā€œOttoman debt and financeā€ — certainly not this guy! www.dukeupress.edu/on-the-semic...

I only buy boosters on prerelease day for new Magic sets, so of course I had to buy some Final Fantasy boosters. Pulled one of the case mythics, Vivi, a character from one of my favorite games in the series, FF IX.

Went to see billy woods last night at Mississippi Studios. Fantastic show! Performed several cuts from his latest album and also other tracks from Hiding Places and Aethiopes. Felt pretty lucky to see one of the premier hip hop performers of our day.

the absolute best part about baseball that no other sport has is a rich and complex tapestry of barely perceptible hand signals and other unspoken gestures that, if deployed in their proper context, make everyone on the field start trying to commit aggravated assault

I’m on a quest to collect wargames about the Golan Heights portion of the larger 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Just received a copy of SPI’s 1975 ā€˜Golan’. This is the ā€˜Collector’s Edition’ that came in a box because the game was also offered as a ā€˜folio’ edition that came in a ziplock bag.

ā€œā€¦holding a Sephiroth card means that I am looking at the future of Magic without depth. If my thirteen year old self received such a card, would it capture my attention…the same way Clone did? I’m not sure. But I do know I would be compelled to ask if it is real or, more accurately, real enough.ā€

High Tide 🌊🐚 is now available for pre-order!!! 🚨This is not a drill!! Go buy it!!🚨 www.underdoggames.com/pages/highti...

With many of the cards in Magic’s ā€˜Final Fantasy’ set spoiled, I want to revisit my essay on the integration of external references into Magic. Are Final Fantasy cards the future of Magic without depth? Will aesthetics be enough to fuse these two distinct fandoms? drive.google.com/file/d/1wE9A...

I knew the new billy woods album would be good but then I heard this line from the track, *Born Alone,* and it went to ā€˜11’ for me: ā€œBustin' open a pack, fingers sticky with resin, I've heard it all before like Russian peasantsā€ youtu.be/dKfudMYkvsE My guy is not wrong!

If you would have told me five years ago that the Royals would not only have dominant pitching but also a growing reputation for developing pitching, I absolutely would not have believed you. And yet here they are!

Tremendous angst over student use of AI with little acknowledgment that this is the byproduct of an educational system obsessed with ranking, grading, measuring, and justifying its subjective value through objective lenses. The system is in crisis because AI is the monstrous double.

Had a play-test session of Coast Watchers last year and found it to be a phenomenal design. Volko is, once again, charting a new course for wargame design and Drachen looks to be a fantastic iteration on the novel designs found in its predecessor. Instant P500 order for me.

If you missed our Medievalism panel a few weeks back, you can now watch the recording on our YouTube channel, featuring @robehoughton.bsky.social @jubalbarca.bsky.social @blairapgar.bsky.social & Katie Newell! šŸ“ŗ šŸ‘‡ www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V1O... #gamingthepast #historicalgames

American news really was:

The line keeps being moved by Democrats because America has long lived in a state of ā€˜crisis’ that provides the president a broad range of unchecked powers. Dems don’t want to push back on these powers bc they both want to use them when in power + it’s a fundraising cudgel for when they are not.

The core of this absurd statement is that teachers have empathy. If you have empathy, you tend to care about things like equitable access to education and push back against curriculum nonsense. Empathy inhibits wholesale adoption of ideological indoctrination which tech boosters zealously pursue.

Boosterism of AI focuses on ā€˜raising the floor’ without acknowledging that, on its own and in a vacuum, it simultaneously ā€˜lowers the celling.’ It flattens, rather than enhances, potential. Could it be a useful tool to help raise that ceiling? Yes. But that takes work, which it supposedly ā€˜saves.’

@ardwulf.bsky.social I should have asked you as well; do you have any recs for readings about Napoleonic tactics/maneuver that would be good for someone just starting out in this topic?
