Public comments are essential for transparency, for a government for the people, by the people

Congratulations to the NYS OGS and Office of Language Access on the release of their Language Diversity Dashboard! We are proud to have been a part of this project. It is a prime example of the amazing things that can be done with Census data!

I don't know which part of this quote is most scary. Maybe an algorithm can give me the answer.

Navigating Public Data Access: new challenges

This morning, we released our first TiDbit (Topics in Demography) brief of 2025, titled "New York State's Young Adults"! We explore topics such as the spread of adults aged 18-29 across the state, school enrollment, and top occupations. Read more here: pad.human.cornell.edu/TiDbit/TiDbi...

"If we resist government censorship when it comes to speech, and these surveys represent the voices of Americans at the time when the data were collected, then why are we censoring the voices of Americans?" ~Karthick Ramakrishnan, AAPI APDU statement also gets a mention www.npr.org/2025/02/12/n...

Have information you want to share about the Census Bureau or across the federal government? I'm an @npr.org correspondent who's available via the encrypted messaging app Signal at hansi.01 And this is my latest story:

I don't think it's obvious because of the overwhelming amount of chaos in the news, but this is the biggest shift in American foreign policy since 1945. This is a titanic shift, and I'm not sure anyone knows what the result is going to be.

The FTP server from the Census Bureau is down for "maintenance" again. Given how hard it is to find anything on this server, it might take a while for outsiders to perform this "maintenance". /s

APDU has issued a statement on the removal of public data. Please read and share widely. (Link to full text in comments.)

Some scary stuff going on

Santos spent so much time trying to rebuild public trust in the Census Bureau. I hope his replacement doesn’t undo all that work.

This is grossly irresponsible reporting by the AP. What’s being offered is not a buyout. The deal is if you agree to resign in September you can continue working remotely until then. There is no buyout or severance.

Today's story: apnews.com/article/trum...

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research. Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions

Bet of the day: How many of today's Executive orders will end up being challenged in court? Will be halted in court? Will be deemed illegal in lower court? In the Supreme Court? Who will get the blame in those cases: the courts, or the President who issued illegal orders?

Grounded in fear, hate and falsehoods, U.S. immigration policy calling for mass deportation of millions of people, is not an act of justice but a failure to recognize the sacred worth of every individual. www.umcjustice.org/latest/churc...

According to the new population estimates from the US Census Bureau, New York State added population in the last two years after a big dip during the pandemic. We prepared a memo with some highlights as we saw them: pad.human.cornell.edu/papers/downl...
