Whatever Trump may claim, renewable electricity does not make electricity systems unreliable. @nathanielbullard.com with the receipts. SAIDI = system average interuption duration index, a measure of the average cumulative electricity service outage per customer (aka how much time the power is out)

We at @planetmoney.bsky.social are constantly reading the work of economists and other social scientists to glean ideas, evidence and insights about the economy, and, more generally, the confusing world around us. Welcome to the inaugural installment of the Planet Money Econ Roundup!

If you add up all the fossil power plants in Germany you get 70 GW. The average energy use is 50 GW. Now know that there is a backlog of battery project seeking approval of over 225 GW! This indeed is a tsunami! And we'd better learn how integrate these batteries into the grid fast!

This is why you should call it decongestion pricing.

Outside academia, “congestion pricing” sounds like a term coined by the idea’s opponents, because it combines words for 2 unpleasant things, like “death taxes.” The better terms “decongestion pricing” or “congestion relief zone” describe what the price buys for those who pay it.

The idea that young people think Elon is cool is beyond parody. Every single person I met on Xitter who sung his praises (thousands of them over the years) was a middle-aged white guy.

Let’s try not to make this place like X. When you disagree with something someone wrote, read the whole thread, do some research on the person first (go to their profile, google, ask chatGPT,…) before assuming they are climate skeptics. Thank you 🙏

11 great tips for how to procrastinate! Thanks, Google Gemini.

Today Google's Gemini asked me if I wanted help with my messages to be a more effective communicator. I clicked on "yes". A button appeared that read "tips for procrastination". Here is what I got... Apparently procrastinating is a great skill to have. Thanks Google!! @garymarcus.bsky.social

I sent this to my brother, who is an engineer who works on HVAC technology. Said it would be nice if this comes out soon, as the industry is currently freaking out about refrigerant phase outs. R32 is not a drop in replacement because of a "slightly flammable" classification.

Not so long ago, we would go to libraries and take out books, and find that someone else had underlined the key passages before us, and feel grateful to inherit some of their efforts. I prefer that to the word association gibberish of the ChatGPT era.

I know Biden is quite unpopular, but my honest view: the man weaponized being exceptionally boring to pass the most progressive set of policies a USA administration has seen in many decades. He got some things wrong, but he also got nowhere near the credit he deserved for what he accomplished.

Nearly all new cars now come with automatic emergency braking and other safety features. Researchers say these systems are saving lives, but there's still debate about how to make them better.

When I said in 2022 that LLMs would hit a wall and that scaling laws would not last forever, everyone laughed. Now even Time Magazine sees that the moment of diminishing returns has likely arrived. Can a crash in GenAI valuations be far away? time.com/7178328/is-a...
