I study out-of-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter physics at the University of Nottingham. Also passionate about science outreach! He/him https://linktr.ee/jaredjeya #physics

Today is my last day at Leeds! It feels bittersweet, but I’m moving to Nottingham on Monday to start a new postdoc there and I’m really excited! I’ll be working with Juan Garrahan and Adam Gammon-Smith on non-equilibrium quantum circuits. Anyone have any recs for cool food/places to see there?

Just leaving this here, from the very beginning of the peer review file of the new Microsoft paper (www.nature.com/articles/s41...).

Now entering our twentieth consecutive minute of trying to set up Teams for an inter-university seminar. We’re going to try Zoom now. Wish us luck!

Me, constantly: “Is that new physics, or just a bug in my code?”

I used to do science outreach with a group called CHaOS (see link!). We’d often ask kids to draw a scientist at the start and end of our sessions. They’d often go from drawing an Einstein-esque mad scientist, to someone who looked at lot like themselves (or perhaps one of us) 😊 #AcademicChatter

We are covering the recent executive orders in the US and the impact on the scientific community. If you have been affected then feel free to get in touch (anonymous or otherwise) by sending an e-mail to physics.world AT ioppublishing DOT org🧪⚛️

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

Meanwhile, on Apple TV:

I probably don't even need to say this, BUT. Me not posting about every nightmarish thing is not because I am not internally (or externally!) screaming multiple times per day, i just figure you heard about it from 100 other people posting about each new nightmare. I assure you, my soul is cracking.

NSF-funded postdoc labmates of mine have been told (by their POs!) to pull the rest of their funds for this year right now‼️ POs said they don't really have clear instructions but this info should be shared widely 🧪

The US government is taking a sledgehammer to science funding. This will be an unqualified disaster, not just for US science but for the world too. Countries outside the US need to pick up the slack and increase funding. We can’t let Trump destroy human innovation.

This is happening at NIST right now. Disgusting.

Happy birthday (yesterday) to @jaredjeya.bsky.social, my lovely and brilliant partner who's such a physicist that he regularly gets distracted by magnifying lenses (even when there are cool manganese nodes and coral samples around!)

Can't imagine why "debating" climate change would hurt anyone? It's not as if it's settled science or anything 🙄 www.platformer.news/meta-fact-ch...

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume? Condensed matter physicist: Yes, I’m keeping my resume topologically ordered ⚛️

On this day, a very special baby was born who would grow up to revolutionise the world, uniting heavens and Earth in one. Even today, his disciples continue to work to better understand the universe he illuminated. His name was Isaac Newton! 🧪 ⚛️ PS: Merry Christmas! 🎄

From the trivia competition at the NASA GISS Christmas party (thanks @alessandraquig.bsky.social for the invite!): “What is name of the new social media website which has overtaken Twitter as the place for scientists to communicate?” 🧪 #AcademicChatter

wtf new zealand* (*the cultural monolith that is NZ, obv)

Feeling very cosy right now with @alessandraquig.bsky.social 🥰

Loving the barely-restrained disdain for the marketing hype exhibited by Dr Leek here #QuantumComputing #physics www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

This is my wonderful partner, she’s doing her PhD in oceanography in New York! Everyone go follow her, especially if you’re interested in the climate or the oceans :) (I’m also going to try and convince her to post some of the incredible things she cooks 😊)
