The real problem in most cities isn’t that the density of people or the density of buildings is “too high.” It’s that the density of cars is too high.

Hey Vancouver voters. This is good news. I’ve worked with and observed city councillors up close in too many cities to list (including Vancouver, obviously) for 33 years. Lucy would be a very good city councillor.

If you're looking for a fun and easy architecture adventure, earlier this week, we had fun checking out Bing Thom's Surrey library, Surrey city hall, SFU's building and topping it off with a coffee and treat at Combine Cafe on King George. A pleasant stroll, some cool designs, and low budget!

Here are some of the unique design features I saw during my viewings of the recently opened Landmark towers on Robson Street. The developer retained many units and just dramatically cut prices, moving this building from 'no way' to 'let's have a look.' #realestate

There’s no evidence that vaccines cause autism. You know what there IS evidence of, when it comes to causal factors for autism? Air pollution. So cars. Including tail pipes, tire particles, brake pads. And fossil fuel energy-related pollution, industrial pollution, etc. And not just autism.

Candid pictures from touring The Butterfly, 1033 Nelson. It has a number of unique features, including, fabric dropped lobby, shaped windows, and open hallways. People have strong opinions about glass enclosed bedrooms! The Butterfly listings, floorplans, architectural review: tinyurl.com/2dmjrchw

“Governments, business leaders and dev’t banks have 2 years to take action to avert far worse #ClimateChange… Scientists say halving climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 is crucial to stop a rise in temperatures of more than 1.5 Celsius that would unleash more extreme weather & heat.”

With 14,000 realtors licensed in the Vancouver area, you need to invest time to ensure you work with the one that's right for you. It's a major life milestone and complicated process so you need to go far deeper than their looks or sense of humour. Here's how: www.jasonhutchison.ca/101-question...

It is 2018. Vancouver is developing a city-wide strategy. Apartments are illegal on 3/4 of residential land. It is 2022. The Vancouver Plan is here! Apartments are illegal on 3/4 of residential land. It is 2026. Vancouver implements the plan. Apartments are illegal on 3/4 of residential land.

This is pretty cool and it'd be nice to see them start the project. The waterfront transit hub looks innovative. vancouversun.com/opinion/colu...

Vancouver Council had a late night listening to speakers on the Broadway Plan updates. People have legitimate concerns about losing our most affordable housing at a fast rate. It'd be good to see Council focus more new builds on low density areas such as houses or redevelop commercial lots.

In addition to being financially risky, Bitcoin mining generates tons of greenhouse gas emissions and pollutes air & water. It’s bad news for climate and public health—and disproportionately impacts vulnerable communities. This motion also flies in the face of Vancouver’s climate commitments.

“the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy.” Are we going to keep doing business as usual?

The Butterfly just opened and the first listing is priced at a loss for the owner. If typical, about 10% of the units will hit the market. Here's a link to a review by Trevor Boddy, Vancouver's leading architecture critic, floorplans & the listing. www.jasonhutchison.ca/building/the...

Great news! With $1.9M in emergency assistance to renters last fiscal year, the BC Rent Bank saved renters $16.1M - while the BC Government saved $11.4M through lower public expenditures for health care, child welfare, and housing services. 👍🏾 👇🏾 bcrentbank.ca/news/evictio...

I've been on the board of a nonprofit housing provider and am currently a realtor. The social housing model that I most like are discrete buildings with a scale of rents from heavily subsidized to near market. Easier to manage and financially self-sufficient. www.theglobeandmail.com/real-estate/...

As Twitter twitters... I'll say here that, as someone that helps folks buy their homes, less indoor air pollutants (incl. those that cause asthma in children) and more environmentally sustainable homes are good things. Happy for the ban on gas for space and water heating in new builds to be upheld.

As City of Vancouver will soon consider adopting bitcoin... 'The greenhouse gas emissions of Bitcoin mining alone could be sufficient to push global warming beyond the Paris Agreement's goal of holding anthropogenic climate warming below 2 degrees Celsius.' unu.edu/press-releas...

SERENDIPITY ALERT: As a result of last night’s gas vote, Vancouver’s overall carbon pollution in 2035 will be roughly 20,000 tonnes LOWER than it would have been if Mayor Sim and his colleagues had not attempted to deep-six the existing restriction. Here's why... 🧵 (1/6)

Vancouver's Council is considering reintroducing gas to new builds for heating and using bitcoin, both are horrible for our environment They campaigned on sustainability as one of their 3 values but doing the opposite. Handing off worsened crises to younger generations isn't leadership.

Vancouver! Today is your last chance to provide input on whether the city should re-allow methane gas for heat and hot water in new buildings. You have until 5pm to submit written comments or sign up to speak to council. Please make sure your voice is heard! vancouver.ca/your-governm...

This Tuesday, council votes on whether to go back to allowing natural gas for heating buildings in Vancouver. I want to take a look at the stated reasons behind this move, and assess their accuracy. A bit of a long thread but an important one... 🧵 www.vancouverisawesome.com/local-news/t...

Tough to keep fighting #climate battles we have already won. But that is where we find ourselves in #Vancouver 🇨🇦 this week as our populist-right mayor and his majority council seek to roll back a restriction on gas in new construction that's been on the books since Jan 2022. A 🧵... (1/10)

Me launching my newsletter with a paid option (if u like, but it’s also fun to hang either way!!) after making news videos for FREEEE for the last two years:

It’s an honor to be appointed BC Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. Housing combined with Infrastructure. We have made some progress on getting more affordable housing online but we have much more work to do🙏🏾

Turns out that Thind Properties is the latest developer to succumb to financial issues. We won't know the full outcome for a while. I can exhale now as I don't have any pending deals in their developments. We're definitely seeing one of the major risks in buying pre-sale!

Here're some beautiful designs by a local builder.

Are we sure further oil and gas development is the way to go?
