The last Leo, Leo XIII, was born in 1810. In 1896 he was persuaded to allow a film camera into the Vatican. He is the oldest (or, the earliest born) human being ever caught on film.

Oh, I really, really, really love to talk about the importance of copyright, all right. Probably not like most other librarians though.

This and

I used to do this and completely stopped about a decade ago. I have a three prong test for advice -- 1) is it useful? 2) is it true? 3) is it kind? -- ideally advice should hit all three. "Move if you can" is arguably true, but fails the other two super hard.

Students, what would you look for from your school's library at this historical moment? What would help you?

It can often be difficult to tell Sheep (right) and Goats (left) apart, but to the trained eye there's an obvious difference: While both commit Crimes, only Goats are aware that their actions are wrong, and are thus capable of Sin.

Again, we (as in higher ed generally) largely did this to ourselves, in tandem with the private sector -- both of us working in tandem to make education primarily transactional job training -- and we need to accept our part in that and figure out how, if possible, it can be fixed.

This is a solution and one lots of people are going to. It works. It’s also pedagogically terrible. Fundamentally ableist in structure. It assesses skills that are not the relevant skills for any meaningful intellectual activity. It represses skills that are meaningful. I don’t have an answer.

I think I speak for all of us when I say lmao

I am 100% serious when I say that Harvard's response to this rambling bullshit should simply be this classic:

Just noting - Trump is bragging about decorating the Oval Office in gold while telling America's kids to cut down on buying toys.

People talk about communist propaganda but my god look at this.

Okay friends, I’m on a GenAI working group for the federation that represents most faculty associations in British Columbia. What do you think every faculty member should read about AI before walking into a room where decisions are being made about the role of AI in post secondary?

This is so, so bleak, but I thought this part was actually kind of poignant: people are searching for meaning in a world that has sought to eliminate all the spaces where they can learn and discuss big questions. This is what you end up with. www.rollingstone.com/culture/cult...

Ilan Pappé: "student movements that force the university to divest are going to be written into history as being part of a movement that eventually turned boycotts into sanctions". This is an astute observation, particularly for libraries that invest in proprietary infrastructures & software.

"if you see all of the external threats coming to our profession and then turn around and say "yeah the best i can do is hire part time for a job that requires a master's degree and offer no benefits", you are part of the problem" #LIS #GLAM #Libraries

That’s my thing. All I have heard about my entire life is men’s many problems. Whomst among us has ever had the freedom to ignore men’s problems?!! All nonsense. Men need socialism and a nap.

Sure. Thread follows.

I have been thick in US healthcare (admittedly, just before the ACA) and thick into Ontario's/Canada's, and there is never any doubt in my mind which one I vastly prefer, even with its occasional warts. No contest.

I've said this before on other platforms, but a lot of this is higher ed doing it to themselves by treating university as increasingly transactional job training. Pay your tuition, get a piece of paper that lets you apply for a certain class of employment. Can't really blame students too much.

Who can forget the Swiss-Austrian Union, or its famous capital - Istanbul.

Just passing along some friendly advice on how to approach potential changes to the Australian health care system @drruthmitchell.bsky.social

AI’s only general purpose use is to control labor. Thank you.

WHY NOT INDEED

A new experiment in tasking begins 🧪 #Taskmaster is ON NOW!

The lady who teaches people how to make filling meals from Dollar Tree does more to help the world than every person who ever typed “just grow your own food” combined

Things you can't unsee, this one noted on RPGnet: When AI related research produces a really good tool, we call it whatever it does and not AI. Optical character recognition, alt-text generation, translation, facial recognition, autocomplete, etc - If it's good, it escapes the slop bucket.

I've said this before but yes you should be eating bugs and yes I do look forward to the Liberals making you eat bugs. bugs are good.

And now, the forced bug eating will commence. #elxn45 #elxn2025 #CanadaVotes
