Marsh marigold and rue anemone are both starting to bloom today. #nativeplants

I've seen this plant pop up in various spots in my yard and always assumed it was just a weed. Decided to finally ID it today and it seems to be native geum canadense. Sounds like it can be aggressive. Anyone have experience with this specie? Worth keeping around? #nativeplants

Mrs. Duck is perched on my fence. #birds 🪶

I walked past my native garden today and thought about how something as simple as adding a couple logs completely changed the character of it, for the better. This section of my garden always suffered a bit. This was step one in helping it succeed better as a habitat.

We're really missing out in the US right now.

It's amazing that she can just tuck her head in and chill in my pond while there's a human sitting 8 feet from her.

Two Coopers hawks were following each other around the Smolenski Park prairie restoration, and then a third flew in and a fight broke out. They were buzzing right over my head, locking talons and everything! Super fun to watch. #birds 🪶

Prairie smoke. #nativeplants

It's been a month since my gardens were burned and there's a lot of green now. You may notice a lot of grass-like leaves here. I noticed a sedge growing in this garden last year. I didn't plant it and probably should have worked at removing it before it spread. No idea if its native or not. 😬

An eastern chipmunk peaking out of its burrow in my yard.

I finished moving the second log in place. It was a lot of work but they'll last a long time as they slowly break down. I also planted some wild geranium along the sides of them.

More photos of the mallard in my garden pond. #Birds 🪶 #Photography

Yesterday I took down a large branch that was growing at an extreme angle. A few large pieces have been added to my native gardens as additional habitat.

Great news! I was sitting out by my pond and all of the sudden Mrs. Mallard landed in it five feet in front of me! #Birds #Ducks 🪶

Darn it. I accidentally scared off Mrs. Mallard earlier tonight while cutting down a branch. Hopefully she's not permanently scared off.

You can't see it, but I planted about two dozen more #nativeplants in the woodland strip along my driveway. I also noticed a lot starting to come up when I was looking for places to plant them. This area will look a lot different in about a month.

On today's hike: Great blue heron, Eastern phoebe in the prairie, and a Canada goose in a vernal pond loud with chorus frogs. 🪶 #Birds

Some of the wildlife in my garden pond today. Green frog, bullfrog, & mallard.

Mrs. Mallard just hangs out by my garden pond all day now. No sign of a nest yet. 🪶 #birds

Lots of #birds today, but only of a handful of species. 🪶

What a mess of invasives I stumbled upon today in Smolenski Park. There are plenty of invasives across the woodland anyway, but siberian squill is a first in this park for me.

Henderson's shooting stars (Dodecatheon hendersonii) blooming in the oak woodland at my place. I am honored to be the caretaker of these timeless plants! #oregon #nativeplants #homegrownnationalpark

More finds during today's hike. Turkey feather, crayfish burrows, and wild leeks.

Saw an eastern phoebe and wood ducks at a local pond. 🪶 #birds

Extinction is one of the most depressing things there is. I totally get wanting to reverse it. BUT. There are things you can be doing right now to PREVENT further extinctions. Consider how you're using your property (even if you rent). Can you create habitat on the area you control? This helps!

Today in my native garden: Rattlesnake master, wild bergamot, and deer tracks. #nativeplants

The solar eclipse was one year ago today! It's amazing that over the last 12 months I've been able to see a solar eclipse, the northern lights, a comet, and a total lunar eclipse.

Looking back at this photo I took of geum rivale in a swamp in 2021 and wondering why native plant nurseries don't seem to commonly sell it. It's the prairie smoke of wetlands. #nativeplants

I didn't get any photos of it, but I just saw an American woodcock along the edge of the Smolenski Park prairie restoration!

Confirmed! This bumble bee I photographed in May of 2024 in my native woodland strip on a redtwig dogwood is a queen rusty-patched bumble bee! Not the biggest surprise considering I've seen rustys for the past 6 or 7 years, but still great to document a queen in my garden. Royalty! #nativeplants 🐝

It's been suggested to me that the bee in this photo I took 10 months ago is a queen rusty-patched bumble bee. If so, super cool! I'm no bumble bee ID expert, that's for sure.

Red-bellied woodpecker in my neighbor's tree and European goldfinches at the feeder. #Birds 🪶

She's been hanging out around my pond all day.

Pasque flowers blooming on the Midwestern prairies this week! #nativeplants #prairie #nature #spring

Prairie smoke is producing more flowers, marsh marigold has buds, and wild geranium is peaking out along my driveway. #nativeplants
