one of the projects of the court is to expand the ability of states to pursue reactionary ends and constrain the ability of the federal government to set minimum standards *or* of democratic-led states to expand upon existing rights

The freakout about the Zohran government possibly opening some groceries store in food deserts is fascinating because the simplest way for capital to route around it would be for businesses just open up there and obviate the need but they appear unwilling/uninterested in doing so, so govt steps in.

And then this shit just came out. When you’re making over $700k a year, gaining $12k is nothing. It’s a nice vacation, redoing the garage, giving a niece/nephew a car. When you’re making $23k a year, losing $1600 is “are we paying for food or for the house or for medical bills” territory.

Yeah, wanting non-billionaires to be able to afford some things is "communism." Da fuq outta here.

🚨The Florida government is going to tear down Everglades wetlands so they can build a tent camp in the swamp to fuel Trump's mass deportation operations — and they’re going to get money from Trump that Congress intended for humanitarian care to recently arrived-migrants.

It's been so weird to watch a president learn things in real time when fielding a question from the press. Then, whatever word or concept he learns, he uses in the next few social media posts. It's like when a 3rd grader learns a new fact about dinosaurs.

Today’s unsigned, unexplained #SCOTUS ruling clearing the way for removals of migrants to third countries without any additional process is a disaster—not just on the merits, but because of the government misbehavior that it not only refuses to punish, but effectively rewards. Me, via “One First”:

I see the Washington Post is platforming an op-ed by Krisi Noem, because apparently they're still pissed they missed their opportunity to publish Goebbels in the original German.

He just dropped $280,000,000 worth of artillery in a war that’s not ours, but our grandparents have to live on Ramen noodles because America can’t afford Meals on Wheels anymore. Make it make sense.

I hate when I go to bed early on a Saturday night and wake up Sunday morning only to discover we’ve gone to war in the Middle East without the consent of Congress. 😡

Incredible how Cuomo is absolutely DWARFING everyone else in money and spend and yet it’s still close enough that they’re pulling these stops out. They’re scared.

Incredibly well delivered truth. Netanyahu’s Israel is not biblical Israel. Two parts to this. Worth every second. Part 1

really sums up the media’s coverage of the Trump presidency

World War 3 kinda sucks, but you know, it was either this or pronouns

Impeach the motherfucker.

Just to be crystal clear: bombing Iran is completely illegal.

“ICE in just a few weeks has transformed itself into the closest thing that the US has ever had to a ‘secret police,’ with more seemingly culturally in common with the Klan nightriders of Reconstruction than their federal agency brethren like the FBI or ATF.” @garrettgraff.bsky.social

100 fucking percent. 😳👇

Hello, I’m Jewish. I think genocide is bad and Zohran Mamdani is good. Hope this help.

it is funny how many people affiliated with the secret police have had to say "stop making fun of the secret police, the guy in the tac vest that covers him like a training bra is a hero, he tracked down and subdued two hospice orderlies using only the W-2 forms they file annually"

> New nonpublic data from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) indicate that the government is primarily detaining individuals with no criminal convictions of any kind. www.cato.org/blog/65-peop...

Let the kids pick KPop Demon Hunters for movie night. Surprisingly amazing. Big fan.

These people aren’t afraid Mamdani would be a bad mayor. We have a ridiculous, corrupt, incompetent mayor right now and the city is hanging in OK. They’re declaring all-out war because they’re afraid Mamdani (or Lander) might be a good mayor.

Study: Gun Deaths of Children Rose in States That Loosened Gun Laws "Firearm deaths of children &teenagers rose significantly in states that enacted more permissive gun laws after 2010 Supreme Court ruling...In states that maintained stricter laws, firearm deaths were stable after the ruling"

I just have to say, as a historian of the Reconstruction-era Klan, that masked paramilitaries are very bad and masked vigilantes are even worse and there are causal links between the two and none of this is good for democracy.

Dress it up in progressive language but you're cheating yourself by not doing the work. This is the worst thing about AI: millions of students refusing to learn, taking zero interest in the world around them, empty in mind and heart. Your punishment is the person you will become.

An MIT study shows ChatGPT is eroding people's critical thinking skills, which is unsurprising but could have profound consequences. How do we fight fascism and the worst climate change scenarios when society is eager to off-load challenging intellectual work to AI? time.com/7295195/ai-c... (1)

They've got enough money to throw us into another war, but not enough money to fund the suicide prevention hotline. Very "pro-life." Very "pro-family." So "GREAT."

“A U.S. citizen!” And now he’s missing. Adrian Martinez tried to defend a man ICE was harassing. Video shows six agents swarming him. He struggles but doesn’t lay hands on them. They take him to the ground & shove him into a CBP vehicle. Abuse of power. Keep recording. Don’t stop. (1 of 2)

The individual maximum a person can donate to a NYC mayoral candidate is $2100. Mike Bloomberg just donated $8.3 million to Andrew Cuomo through a super PAC. This is what a rigged campaign finance system, designed to let the wealthy buy elections, looks like.

it would be nice if these repeated recorded instances of dhs and ice not being assaulted and then arresting people, often public figures, for "assaulting an officer" gave a few more people a bit more pause about the presumptive legitimacy of police arrests more broadly

Tariffs are driving up prices The military is arresting citizens ICE is deporting Americans Republicans are assassinating Democrats RFK, Jr fired a bunch of qualified doctors And we’re on the verge of war with Iran But at least transgender athletes are being vilified So congrats MAGA, I guess

In classic form, Trump sidestepped the actual tragedy and used the shooting to tee off on Gov. Walz. No solutions. No sympathy. Just blame, branding, and campaign trail jabs. Because Trump is broken and flawed in almost every way a human being could be.

🚨 There’s a lot of horrific news out of Washington right now—but you might have missed this: Senate Republicans just introduced a plan to sell off 120 million acres of our public lands. Let me break down what’s in the bill and why it’s a full-scale land grab. 🧵

A top staffer to Sen. Tina Smith emailed Sen. Mike Lee’s top staffers on Monday about “how much additional pain you’ve caused on an unspeakably horrific weekend” Via Sam Stein on twitter

We’re announcing new legislation — the No Secret Police Act (SB 627) — to ban local/state/federal law enforcement, w/ some exceptions, from covering their faces when interacting w/ the public & require them to wear identifying info. The secret police behavior we’re seeing destroys trust & must end🧵

WE HAVE QUESTIONS… This is a kidnapping. No uniform, no badge, civilian car. Who are they? ICE? Sanctioned bounty hunters? Either way, they’re grabbing people without warrants. How often is this happening, and why aren’t more people talking about it? Congress?

The thing is, it really isn’t that long since a US senator spewing raving conspiracy theories about a political murder the very next day would legitimately have been a huge national scandal and almost certainly ended with him resigning, or at best announcing a retirement
