It occurs to me that Democrats say "bring manufacturing home!" as an appeal for a return to the time for when one factory job (plus a union!) could support an entire family. Republicans say it because they're deranged xenophobes. Not the same. Often portrayed as the same.

Answer - it's all about the hierarchy. If you think of the world as "us" and "them" and "winners" and "losers", no amount of moral deprivation and ethical compromise is too much to maintain your place in the hierarchy.
