“We have measles outbreaks every year," Trump's health secretary said when asked about the death, which is the nation's first in a decade.

This is terrifying.

Breaking: FDA's March meeting to select flu shot strains for 2025-2026 season has been canceled per email sent to committee members, a VRBPAC member told me. drug companies need about 6 months leeway to make shots in time for fall vax campaigns. #healthpolicy

It is really hard to watch people willfully tear down an infrastructure that allowed us to double lifespans, drastically reduce poverty, and become one of the richest countries in the world.

First measles death in a decade. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

NIH funding is frozen. @annikabarber.bsky.social is keeping score: 50%+ of study sections planned for this year (77/148) have been cancelled. I talked to Dr. Barber about why these delays are disastrous, and why scientists should be pooling info and speaking up: www.chronicle.com/article/nih-...

We missed January council, and if councils aren't allowed to post by early April we'll miss May council too, meaning the next one (Oct) is...you guessed it, in FY26, when the NIH budget could be halved and has to handle a year's worth of backlogged grants.

WE JUST GOT DOGE’D no funding for this year. We have to cancel the program and email 450 applicants there will be no REU program in physics at MSU. First time in 20+ years. I’m fucking livid, y’all.

People forget the horrors of infectious disease. I am just old enough to have gotten the smallpox vaccine, and to remember measles outbreaks and quarantines. I remember classmates who caught mumps. I had friends who died from AIDS. Vaccines were the biggest human achievement of the 20th century.

STAT story is up about study section restart. www.statnews.com/2025/02/24/s...

🧪 As the measles outbreak in West Texas & New Mexico grows to >130, not hard to imagine how much worse this same scenario could be a few years down the road if RFK undermines confidence in & access to vaccines. The signs he will are already adding up. My latest @opinion.bloomberg.com (gift link!):

Just as an FYI, hospitals NEED Medicare and Medicaid dollars to function. Smaller/ rural/ critical access hospitals will not survive without them. So even if you don't rely on Medicare, you still might lose your local hospital or find yourself stranded without care while traveling.

1/The news that additional private attorneys may have their security clearances revoked, as I did, without any due process, simply because they represented someone the President doesn't like is a disgraceful affront to the entire legal and national security system. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/u...

I completely missed that Republicans introduced a bill to increase the endowment tax from 1.4% to 21%. If passed, Harvard would go from paying ~$35m to $525m/yr in federal taxes (that’s 8.2% of its current operating expenses)

TIL (after nearly 50 years of being a chemist) that hydron is the formal IUPAC name for H+ #chemsky

We are, unequivocally, the Bad Guys. We have been before, and we will be again, no doubt, but this one is particularly repellent.

fantastic thread

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Accidents down 55% and injuries down 51% since nyc congestion pricing (!!!) www.nydailynews.com/2025/02/22/c...

Any talk you hear from the current administration about making the US more competitive in science and technology is utter bullshit. What they are doing is sabotaging our country for years if not decades to come.

NIH has stopped considering new grant applications, delaying decisions about how to spend millions of dollars. The freeze occurred because the Trump administration has blocked the NIH… www.npr.org/sections/sho...

Never in my most pessimistic moments did I expect the response to modern biotechnology saving countless lives in a pandemic to be a powerful elite captured by a conspiracy theory and dismantling our defenses against the next one out of some misguided notion of revenge

The next step in trying to dismantle Infectious Diseases research - dismantle @niaidnews.bsky.social - should surprise no one that this a R-led proposal. An unmitigated disaster for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pathogens that affect everyone in the US www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...

I didn't have to pretend. The USPS is a genuine Public Good. I did fan art for it. I Love the USPS.

The order to email Elon Musk five things you did last week or else you’re fired appears to be illegal. More here.

“That is why Trumpists are so focused on “ending DEI” in the federal workforce. They see anti-discrimination and inclusion as a ladder of upward mobility for people they do not believe should have one.”

Since we may be well and truly screwed when it comes to social media, here’s a reminder that small social online communities called BBSes still exist! www.howtogeek.com/686600/remem...

In case anyone says “it’s just measles”.

We're excited to announce we've raised a Seed round with Dimension, Amplify, NVIDIA NVentures, and Compound! Read more about our mission at achira.ai

Achira will transform drug discovery by building atomistic foundation models for biomolecular simulation and leverage massive computation, generative AI, and the frontiers of physics-based synthetic data generation. Excited to be on this journey with @jchodera.bsky.social and this dream team.

Excited to share what I’ve been working on with @tkaraletsos.bsky.social to transform the field of drug discovery with atomistic foundation simulation models! I could not be more thrilled to be working with this dream team. achira.ai

In case you were wondering how the Trump admin was still freezing NIH funds, despite court orders, this is how. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I can't say enough good things about how this excellent @sciencevs.bsky.social podcast from Wendy Zuckerman and @maxkozlov.bsky.social accurately summarizes the terrifying current state of science in the United States. Give it a listen.

When FAA employees are telling us it’s not safe to fly, we should probably listen.
