Literally rewriting macroeconomics to cover up their bufoonery.

Social democrats & conservatives have both hemorrhaged support across Europe The far right has surged

Paid our respects to @enricovillanueva.bsky.social, our banker & economist friend who suddenly passed away on Feb 25 at the young age of 53. Tomorrow he will be laid to rest at a columbarium inside UPLB. We will miss you and your thoughtful takes on the economy, Rico!

Omg. Not in the 21st century.

My latest Rappler article, a quick comment on Brgy Addition Hill's bounty for mosquitoes. A classic example of the "cobra effect" and the "law of unintended consequences." www.rappler.com/voices/thoug...

25% tariffs on Canada & Mexico would cause lower GDP & higher inflation than otherwise in all three countries—including the US. Bookmark our guide to the #USMCA & US trade relations with Canada & Mexico: www.piie.com/microsites/2...

Next week, on Feb 5 at 2 PM, I will be giving this 2025 economic briefing exclusive to Rappler+ subscribers.

There's real value in convening various stakeholders first to get a clear picture of where we are today (and how we got here), which elements are linked, and so on; as a way towards developing a plan to sustainably improve mobility. 🫡 @jcpunongbayan.bsky.social | www.scmp.com/week-asia/op...

US policy economists are having an existential crisis. "What was the point of their careful data-gathering, their complex models, their intricate theories if no one was going to listen to their advice anyway?" www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/b...

My latest @rappler.bsky.social article, an overview of the government's ayuda programs, what they're for, and how they ballooned in recent years (especially in the 2025 budget). www.rappler.com/voices/thoug...

Next week, on January 16, I'll be giving a webinar from the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore as a visiting fellow of their Philippine Studies Programme. I'll discuss recent developments in Philippine fiscal policy, especially concerning the 2025 budget.

A new paper, just to provoke - on the political economy of economic policy advice - just out in Journal of African Economies. tinyurl.com/2sx7tda3

Unbelievable.

My first Rappler column in 2025, where I look back at the economy in 2024 and offer ideas about where we're headed in 2025. Incidentally, this is also my 400th Thought Leaders piece! 🫶 www.rappler.com/voices/thoug...

Got interviewed by @maracepeda.bsky.social for her latest piece in Singapore's The Straits Times. @znsuzara.bsky.social got interviewed as well. www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia...

📣 NEW PUBLICATION! (LAST FOR 2024) 📣 I was commissioned by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies to write this commemorative article in the Philippine Journal of Development (PJD), looking back at the articles published in that journal from 2002-2023.

Got interviewed by Karmina Constantino-Torres of ANC for quick thoughts about the 2025 budget signed today by President Marcos. Full video: youtu.be/DRPtiWIACys?...

He put solar thermal panels on the White House in 1979. 1986 Ronald Reagan put them down. This gives you an idea where we could have been today if only we had more smart people taking care of our livelihood. Rest in peace, Jimmy Carter.

Tomorrow, 30 Dec 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is set to sign the 2025 budget. In my latest @rappler.bsky.social piece, I discuss his options and the dilemma he faces. www.rappler.com/voices/thoug...

IMF calls out the Marcos Jr gov't, which in 2023 decided to set up a pseudo-sovereign wealth fund using the capital of state-owned banks. Bad fiscal management! business.inquirer.net/498648/resto...

New working paper! Last for 2024! 🥳📝

Some folks are pretty good seeing things coming.

From what I see here, @jcpunongbayan.bsky.social’s #FalseNostalgia is a hit, not like that pile of garbage they put next to it.

One cannot help but be suspicious. The 2025 elections may be the biggest reason for cutting budgets on health, education, and social protection that our people direly need.

Here's my summary of the shady reallocations in the 2025 budget. Pork projects were inserted in the DPWH budget, crowding out important funds for social protection, education, and health. Foreign-funded projects were also relegated to unprogrammed funds. All this in the run-up to the 2025 polls. #PH

My latest Rappler column, where I express incredulity over the move of Congress to eliminate state subsidies for PhilHealth in 2025. Every Filipino should be scandalized by this. www.rappler.com/voices/thoug...

Happy to see that my book #FalseNostalgia is the top 2 bestseller of Ateneo de Manila University Press in 2024! 🫶

In my latest Rappler.com piece, I discuss the statement of a technocrat who justified getting funds from social health and insurance in order to finance the Marcos admin's infra projects. That's just bad economics. www.rappler.com/voices/thoug...

But it's still longer than the time I can learn reshape on Stata.

Yesterday I won an award for my first book, #FalseNostalgia!!! Thank you to Paragala: The Central Luzon Media Awards, Holy Angel University, and partner universities in Central Luzon for the Inkwell of Change Award! ❤️

And that's a wrap for my first ever Martial Law Economics (Econ 118) class at UPSE! What a journey it has been! A key takeaway is that studying the past allows us to make so much sense of the present. Another is that we can avoid many problems in the future if only we learned more about our past.

Next semester I'll be teaching Causal Inference in Economics at UPSE (Econ 138)! Any tips about the best references/resources out there? #EconSky

something that is especially clear if you have studied colonialism a bit: a load bearing aspect of maintaining even a semblance of democracy (or defending a sitting autocracy from democracy) is having a military that is unwilling to kill its own citizens

So proud of my teammates in the UP Admissions Evaluation Committee! The University Council decided to defer a decision on the new formula for admissions, but I think this just needs further elaboration and explanation so that most UPD faculty can be convinced of the new, evidence-based methodology.

Claudia Goldin blurbs, "if you read just one book about economics, make it Andrew Leigh's clear, insightful, and remarkable work." I agree. My review.

Recently, President Marcos congratulated Donald Trump, and Trump asked after his old friend Imelda. Did you know that during martial law the Marcoses bought 4 buildings in New York, including what would later be known as the Trump Tower? My latest Rappler column: www.rappler.com/voices/thoug...
