brandolini's law defeating the zvi

is this the end of the internet as we know it? i have to "prove" that i'm human for visiting sites like lesswrong, amazon, marginalrevolution? do captchas just to visit sites? which i suspect are failed by more humans than AI by now?

there's much hate for microsoft defender out there, but it detected a suspiciously compressed archive that was smuggled into the "easy diffusion" github because the maintainer forgot to lock the wikipage. for about half a year windows users were directed to malware.

the twitter ad algo is convinced i want some workout routine. first it tried ads for middle aged men looking to get ripped fast. it didn't take, so now it's showing me femboy fitness ads...

the role of replication crisis and negative results remaining unpublished in hampering alzheimer's research and supporting fraud. should every science journal be required to run a "shadow" edition, with atleast 1 negative study per every 2 or so positive study published?

screwworm crossed the panama screwworm barrier into north america, into mexico. in 2017 a florida outbreak got successfully contained [1,2]. would be a shame if the current federal disruption hampered containment efforts. 1 web.archive.org/web/20170704... 2 www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

i wonder if applying strict cost-benefit analysis to foreign aid could fully compensate and maybe even increase effective aid despite a 40% cut. i guess depends on how badly it has been run. refocusing on the most effective programs abandoned by the US could go some ways.

geothermal cost declines beating previous estimates due to faster drilling (ROP, rate of penetration) enabled by PDC (polycrystalline diamond cutter) drill bits and faster steel casing

i love the idea of beaming power to space or aircraft

who here has a list of innocent sounding insults that are only devastating to certain professions?

share of LLMs among corporate users. i assume meta means running some meta model on their own, since there is no meta offering for enterprise clients, or is there?

i'm happy enhanced weathering for CO2 sequestering is getting more publicity. but this headline is BS, people have been writing about this for years. there has been 0 shortage of cheap materials, it's all a matter of political will. news.stanford.edu/stories/2025...

it's so sad to see a blogger who you've been following for years decline. another idiotic link by climateerinvest to a completely unserious take about government debt that exclusively uses graphs like these and won't look at debt per gdp or wealth. this is completely meaningless.

would be nice, wouldn't it

the chinese PR disaster that the naming of industrial policy in its 13th five-year-plan "Made in China 2025" was.

so NASA has a 2.2 second drop tower to simulate microgravity for 2.2 seconds, and in the year 2000 there was a celebration of the 20.000th drop. the image caption doesn't say who or what is pictured, how they're celebrating.

it's an old idea to merge the ATF and FBI, lots of overlap between them. whether that's the actual goal who knows, but it's one of the saner ideas out there.

so while my new twitter | X account didn't get insta banned, (good enough since i mostly value reading other people) it did get labelled as "inauthentic" and limited reach. i strongly suspect that using more than one twitter tab open is the culprit. top notch engineering lol.

it's something but i still don't understand why south korea of all places doesn't dare to pull a messmer plan. they have proven they can build nuclear power plants mostly on budget and on time. add battery storage and it's possible to go even completely nuclear. they could easily aim for >50%.

not sure how real this is, but apparently the admin is sincere in believing that all this mineral wealth, that for whatever reason went unexploited even before the war, will somehow be lifted. can't imagine that a wartorn ukraine is a better environment for mining. www.reuters.com/business/us-...

who will build the fleet of 10000 1200m tall >100MW floating wind turbines that will provide all the hydrocarbons for the entirety of the UK? caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/2024/05/01/c...

we could have had a floating PWR nuclear power plant gigafactory half a century ago

ngl, if you recognize this shape you might be cooked. my excuse is that exploring internet madness is a pastime of mine. but who knows, if i was richer maybe i too would try to build free energy devices lol

made reddit account, reddit recommends me the communism subreddit. it seems every platform will get captured by the strongest brainworms it tolerates.

how can anybody claim to take fiscal policy seriously then only look at absolute debt levels and not debt per GDP? followed a link to the peter g. peterson foundation that does this. nobody should listen to a single thing by anyone who does this, completely unserious. www.pgpf.org/programs-and...

might sound trivial but it's good to remind oneself that determining real / inflation-adjusted measures of economic activity can be much more complicated than it looks on the surface. it's a continuous effort to keep inflation measurements accurate and relevant.
