"The real moon outshone the paper one, and, from a distance, it was impossible to distinguish the light flooding through the film scenes from the light flooding through stained glass." My optimistic-ish @heraldscotland.bsky.social call-to-arms on Glasgow's future. (with HTs to Italo Calvino).

Read our latest "Love Your Local Church" blog as the Rev W Gerald Jones reflects on the special place that the historic Straiton Parish Church in South Ayrshire holds in his heart. #SteepleSaturday 👇 www.scotlandschurchestrust.org.uk/blog/love-yo...

#DogWalkDay The lodger has refused to go out in the rain for two days but today was dry, if somewhat muddy. Lots of water around. Here she is at the Jesus well, where the water is unfit for human consumption.

Desperate plight of Scotland's religious built heritage merited front page coverage again on Friday. We had a very positive meeting in Dec about this issue with Culture Cab Sec Angus Robertson MSP, we hope his meeting with Church of Scotland is equally useful. www.heraldscotland.com/news/2493332...

Donner und Blitzen here just now.

Some snaps of our trust chairperson, Prof Adam Cumming, at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway this afternoon to give a talk on our National Bard's connections to churches in Ayrshire.

Our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, Pencaitand Parish Church has a history going back to the 12th century with connections to William the Lion and Robert the Bruce. The striking tower, square and hexagonal, is both a belfry and a dovecot. 🧵1/2

The Press & Journal has revealed plans to turn Burghead Parish Church in Moray, that closed in Dec 2023, into a supermarket. In 2011, Scotmid successfully converted the former Church of Scotland kirk in Torphins into another branch of their chain of shops. www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/mora...

Just poking around the church in Edinburgh where Agatha Christie married her second husband.

Our canine lodger is definitely a full time job. Her owners said she’d sleep all day but that’s not the case here. She’s also as black as the Earl o’Hell’s waistcoat and we can’t see her eyes.

The wonderful band of volunteers from the Inverclyde Church Recorders were out documenting another closing church on Saturday. This time they visited the beautiful B-listed Cathcart Old Parish Church, which very sadly held its final service in November last year. (1/2)

#MementoMoriMonday Gravestone, in Restalrig churchyard, of army surgeon, Samuel Scott, who died at Piershill Barracks, Edinburgh, in 1825. Johnston’s Roll of army medical officers notes with a ‘P’, that he served in the Peninsular war, when he was with the 5th Dragoons.

The lodger has arrived, so we’ll have plenty to keep us occupied for the next week and a bit.

This new website is phenomenal: 3 million records covering 5,000 years of Scottish history, pulling together various resources from Historic Environment Scotland into one platform. Great stuff 👏

'My love is like a red, red rose, that's newly sprung in June': I played it at the station, but Their piano's no' in tune. I plinked and plonked the ivories, And some were slow or mute, I'll no' be playin' there again, Of that, I ha'e nae doubt.

Valentine’s Day hasn’t been celebrated here for at least 58 years but I do have an RAMC sweetheart brooch from #WW1.

Really like this #StainedGlass in Helensburgh Parish Church. Designed by Wm Leiper and installed by J&W Guthrie. In memory of Olivia Aitken, who died in 1890. When her husband died in 1923, the inscription was altered to include him.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Symbols of Mortality Conference Programme is available to peruse/download via the link below. 👍😀💀 www.lorraineevans.com
