Too true. But like you and probably most of our colleagues, our early careers were funded by these agencies. And if you don't go into industry this funding is essential for academic researchers early in their careers where their entire lab is funded by one or two grants.

That's because protein folding and medical diagnostics are relatively easy to verify with objective science. LLM's that just do text in text out are harder to verify. That being said, if you saved a couple of hours having the computer write your brief, then you should have time to check citations.

This has helped the whole AI industry. There are countless other examples of these direct benefits.
If you need more evidence on the impact of federal funding of science, then consider this is where the world sends its best and brightest to train. In these federally funded labs.

We have adhesives from a variety of critters who stick to things really well.
AI seems to be everywhere and we're hearing about how difficult it is to test the accuracy of large language models like ChatGPT. The predictions of AI line Alpha-fold in biology can be tested and are.

The majority of scientists who contribute to efforts like this are from institutions outside of the government and volunteer their time for these efforts. Science is not political. Hiding a truth does not change it. Remember when Trump told us Covid would go away, if we just stopped testing. /end

A recent study found that around 70% of scientific publications contained serendipitous results not anticipated by the researchers. As a biomedical researcher with 40 years of experience, I can confirm this. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Sharpies are cheaper than scientists and science. Sharpies are also indispensable lab tools. I love my sharpies and use them daily.

Canada has 40 million people. Why expect imports and exports to balance. This is not about balancing a budget. It's about how we spend out time. I trade my time for money. I can buy something or make it myself. Making it myself requires time and money.
