This is a Hall of Fame reader comment on a very reactionary op-ed about Zohran Mamdani's victory that was published in my local paper today.

Several of the variables in everyone's mental models of the energy sector (also actual models, of course) have been jostled pretty hard lately. If anyone weighs in, completely confident, to tell you what new generation assets should / will get built, where, and when, skepticism is warranted.

me: there's no way this day could possibly get any better Ireland:

🔌💡 Smart report from Ember. I wish, though, it would point out just how *different* the challenge of electrifying res. heat is from electrifying transport, and how much harder. Early subsidies helped drive batteries down learning curves enough for some EV adoption; now falling rices can take over...

@ember-energy.org: electrification is not just a downstream detail of the energy transition, it's the "main stage."

The most important decision you’ll make when getting a new heat pump installed is which contractor to work with. The brand matters much less, and in many cases you’ll find the exact same equipment with a different sticker on it. Really great video from Miss Mini Split.

While cleaning up the grid mostly involves a relatively small number of big power plants, electrification in the US involves replacing ~a billion devices across ~a hundred million locations and decision-makers. Hugely heavy lift. We need so many people working on electrification from so many angles.

Meanwhile back at the Municipal Building, 700 public servants are busy managing pension funds & financing infrastructure. Proud to lead our teams in the @nyccomptroller.bsky.social office. Congrats @marklevinenyc.bsky.social Excited to hand these critical responsibilities over to you in January.

New York! Come see me grill this good dude (see what I did there) urldefense.com/v3/__https:/...

Senate Republicans would increase the biofuels credit more than sevenfold and remove all of Biden's rules on it so it will be scooped up by corn ethanol producers making fuel that is worse for the climate than gasoline. Great stuff prospect.org/politics/202...

The big problem with beef isn’t cow farts. It’s land. Cows use 10x more than poultry. Americans eat 3 burgers a week—cutting to 2 would save a Massachusetts worth of land (and deforestation!) per year.

I’m not sure I heard Mamdani talking about climate at all on the trail, but energy affordability has been a big issue for him over the years (ConEd rate hikes) and if he becomes mayor he will be in charge of implementing one of the country’s strongest green buildings laws

Renewables are booming, but electrification lags in OECD. ⚡️ While countries like Germany & Chile boost solar/wind, electrification rates are slow, unlike China's rapid growth. Bridging the gap is key for a successful energy transition. New @ember-energy.org report ember-energy.org/latest-insig...

he's right and he's right to say it

Feels like the so-painfully-obvious-that-nobody-is-saying-it lesson from the night is that short-form video is now one of the chief mediums of American politics — and is arguably now just as important as TV for some electorates. Short-form video is where persuasion and name ID happen now.

If you thought the media was gross when they were campaigning for Cuomo, wait until you see them trying to bring the Mamdani administration down.

Congratulations to the 13 brave women who risked their careers and reputations to stand up to Cuomo’s sexual predation

This.

Every single one of these people should lose their next primary

local elections MATTER for CLIMATE all of them!!! every last one!!!!!!

Done with Cuomo. Schumer and Gillibrand need to be next. Please get these two out of the Senate - New York. LFG.

With Mamdani winning, here’s implications on climate/jobs: ✅Local Law 97, NYC’s “Green New Deal” law, will be fully implemented 😄 ✅shot at fast, free buses to cut pollution, improve quality of life 🙏 ✅we can ADVANCE on smart small building energy efficiency requirements👍 Landlord lobby lost!!!

Man, I've been saying for months that American Jews and Muslims are natural allies. So it's pretty gratifying to see winning politicians actually put it into practice. Need more of this.

😭😭😭😭😭😭

Brad Lander for Governor. Or Senate.

crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their consultants

let a thousand challengers fucken bloom

A Muslim son of immigrants might become mayor of NYC in part because he cross endorsed and supported a Jewish candidate and Black candidate, and vice versa. It's a beautiful American story for the rest of us. A nightmare for all the right people ;) It's so New York.

Can we all give #BradLander a big hand for throwing himself on the tracks in front of the Cuomo train, because it's starting to look like it worked.

While New England and New York are in dire need of precious electrons, Hydro-Québec has to open the spillways on the St. Maurice River because they have too much water in the Gouin Reservoir. 🔌💡 www.lenouvelliste.ca/actualites/a...

What's extremely bonkers, Central Hudson off peak rates start at 7. I'm currently getting the cheapest electricity I've gotten in over 6 months. Just imagine an actual DER program here in the Hudson Valley.

I am impressed! @kevinjkircher.com and @energysmartwv.bsky.social are both talking to the nation today via @npr.org’s @allthings6.bsky.social. Yay. Clean that AC filter and seal those leaks for more comfort in the heat. 👏 🔌 💡

This #HeatWave sucks, but it is great in that it gives us a politically powerful and timely issue to push for and get some serious climate action done. We should be able to force Congress to hold energy "emergency" hearings and seriously the #EnergySky feed should be entered on the record.
