Even the Romans knew that prosecuting white-collar crime requires informants www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/s...

Steven Miller’s new theory, that a "saboteur," "Democrat" DOJ atty invented the idea that Abrego Garcia was mistakenly removed to CECOT—is false. The error was admitted, on 3/31, by Robert Cerna, an ICE acting field office director: 1/3 storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

How New Washington works: Companies have been bilking the govts out of billions for "skin bandages" that don't do much Biden moved to crack down Then a company donated $2M to Trump super-PAC After that, Trump publicly praised the product, and froze the crackdown www.nytimes.com/2025/04/10/h...

The morning after the election, I had a panicked thought: “My threat model is wrong.” I’d been giving privacy advice for years, but my counsel would not protect against an authoritarian president seeking revenge against political enemies. Tyranny was going to require a new threat model.

New consumer sentiment data just out for April: Americans’ expectations for how the economy will fare over the next year are now at their worst in 45 years. Consumer confidence is down 40% since Trump’s inauguration, including a 20% drop among Republicans.

Horrendous: *UMICH PRELIM APRIL CONSUMER SENTIMENT FALLS TO 50.8; EST 53.8 *UMICH YR-AHEAD EXPECTED INFLATION AT 6.7%, HIGHEST SINCE 1981

The fear among academics and lawyers now talking on the record on just about any topic that involves the federal government or the White House is really extraordinary and worrisome, and getting worse, it seems to me, every week. Dissent by an establishment figures becoming verboten in the US

“Rare, ugly and worrying”. That is how Krishna Guha, vice-chair at Evercore ISI, described the market moves today. In the last 30 yrs he said there are only four other episodes in which the U.S dollar index depreciated more than 1.5% with the yield on U.S. 30-year government debt up more than 10bps

JFC. WE ARE STILL WORSE OFF. We still have *at least* 10% global tariffs. Businesses can’t make decisions, as they don’t know what tariffs will be 90 days from now I usually say Trump is great at repackaging the status quo as victory but this is significantly worse than pre-Liberation Day status quo

You see what the MAGA story will be from the other Fox dude: “Only the brilliant Donald Trump could have engineered this glorious rally.”

Bond vigilantes’ death was grossly exaggerated

The SEC is the only agency that could get to the bottom of who did these trades — and they would have to want to know.

I cannot wait for pleasure of watching the supercut of all the Trump lickspittles talking in the past few days about what a master negotiator and deal maker he is… Master negotiations: 0 Deals made: 0 Utter caves: 1

It’s the SEC that has most of this data and surveillance skill for this — and the chances that they look into this are below the chances that MAGA women swear off plastic surgery.

Alright, I think people knew of the tariff pause and traded it beforehand. You can see before Trump posted "buy" on Truth Social, traders opened $QQQ $TQQQ and $SPY calls RIGHT BEFORE THE NEWS, someone opened $SPY 509 calls, expiring TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those calls are up 2100% in one hour.

Other financial and economic crises were diffuse, volumes of books and debates have been written about the causes. The only thing to be written about this is three words: Trump did it

Scoop—>Kari Lake is being detailed to the State Dept to work on shutting down the agency that oversees VOA, where she is a senior adviser. She said in a statement that she looks forward to working “under the strong leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.” W/ @yvonnewingett

On reflection, maybe it wasn't a great idea for Trump and his advisors to repeatedly & openly muse about defaulting on our debt

Every damned word of this 4-graf brief, except “By WSJ Staff,” should scare the bejeesus out of you this morning. www.wsj.com/livecoverage...

Seems we are past the “large sales, high volatility, functioning markets” phase of the Trump meltdown and into the “real risk of the kind of financial instability that has direct and immediate effects on the real economy” phase.

Terrifying....

So many leopards, so many faces

It’s the stupid, economy.

FUNDSTRAT tonight: “.. in the last few days, we have had many conversations with macro fund managers. .. A few have quietly wondered if the President might be insane.”

Ok what’s going on here? Yields are going up which means bond prices are going down. Fewer buyers of the world’s safest asset. Normally when the economy slows, there’s a flight to safety, not away from it. Means the world may be abandoning America. We are flirting with a true crisis.

Georgetown scholar Dr. Khan Suri, who was abducted by ICE, was refused food/water to break Ramadan fast, housed in a room without a bed, and issued *used* underwear. His child cried for days after he was taken and has since stopped speaking. ccrjustice.org/home/press-c...

NEW: Having Gutted the IRS, DOGE is Now Preparing to Shutter the Tax Division at the Department of Justice. For the Super-Rich Paying Taxes Will Probably Be All But Voluntary Going Forward. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/doge-...

Disclosed on the docket: The IRS will give taxpayer data about immigrants to US authorities conducting criminal investigations, saying it will support President Donald Trump’s pledge to deport people illegally in the US, per overnight court filing. From David Voreacos:

All right I got fed up and had to write this. And I’m sure after reading it carefully, Trump will stop saying this www.propublica.org/article/hist...

Actually President Trump, some humans do know why we passed an income tax. It was a 40-year struggle — and a weird accident. Here’s the real history: www.propublica.org/article/hist...

Nobody has earned more "fell for it again" badges than Greenwald

With recession fears rising, it’s wild and terrifying that bond prices are falling. Three months ago, Trump inherited the world’s reserve currency, the world’s safest and most trusted asset, and the world’s deepest, best regulated capital markets. All of that is now at risk.

Yikes www.caymancompass.com/2025/04/06/b...

I just cannot with this 🤡.

Trump sent his cabinet to the Sunday shows to reassure, and they said the tariffs are permanent/being negotiated, strategic/across the board and will fix the trade deficit/manufacturing/national defense/toe fungus. Collectively they made it clear there's no plan beyond one man's whims.
