In Amman for the week. Any suggestions for must-do/must-see attractions here?

Happy Birthday to James Baldwin, whom we can still learn from if we're willing to listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWwOi17WHpE

Some news: I’m joining the board of directors at the American Journalism Project. From my worlds of journalism education, reporting and nonprofit news, I look forward to joining this team and working to advance a thriving local news industry that benefits communities across the country.

Anyone who thinks killing affirmative action will stop racists from questioning the merit of black achievements has really not been paying attention.

Hey, is it true that if you find someone's ID you're supposed to put it in a mailbox and the post office will return it to them? Found someone’s valid drivers license in the subway.

By the way, I wrote this for the New Yorker today: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/07/10/the-end-of-affirmative-action

The ruling today points to the radicalism of this particular Supreme Court and some of the most absurdist views that have been passed off as reasonable. None of this is new or surprising but it is worth thinking about how some of this may play out.

Roberts odd concession that students may write about how they’ve experienced race in their application essays doesn’t amount to much. Higher ed is moving away from app essays because of ChatGPT.

Thank god we’re still able to consider geography, musical ability, athleticism, legacy status and even height (if we wanted to) in college admissions. In short, none of the reasons why people actually barred from universities in the first place.

And Shine swam on…

The one faulty conceit in the Spiderman narrative is the idea that cops — NYPD cops at that — hate him because he’s a vigilante. If anything they’d turn a blind eye anytime he showed up.

Will be in Tokyo for a week starting tomorrow. Anyone have suggestions for what I should do/see?

I could not find this image when I looked for it last week but fortunately I came across it today and like the man I’m standing next to, it’s timelessly relevant.

*spoilers* I’m only an occasional viewer so I may be missing something but I’m not sure I understand Shiv’s thinking here. Is she any better off with Tom in charge than she would be with Kendall? Is anyone? Mattson is going to fire Tom in two years anyway.

This is predictable. The more interesting question is about Florida’s quiet losses — the companies that would’ve invested there but were spooked by DeSantis’s behavior. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/18/business/disney-ron-desantis-florida.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Congrats to the Columbia Journalism School class of 2023!

Thank you Christiane Amanpour! We could not have asked for a better commencement day speaker.

Three hours ago I announced to the 2023 class of Columbia Journalism School the launch of a pilot loan repayment program that is pegged to non-profit news. https://journalism.columbia.edu/columbia-journalism-school-offer-educational-loan-repayment-assistance-recent-graduates-inaugural

They will use what’s posted on the internet against you in court

I, um, do not think this is a first time.

Just got here. What'd I miss?

A minor point re: Santos . We've said that his mendacity is a reflection of the weakness of local news. That's true. But his lies are satirically large. The most dangerous lies are typically the subtle ones. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/05/10/nyregion/george-santos-charges-news

Glad to see A People’s History of Twitter — and @wagatwe.bsky.social and @jacky.wtf — included in this important analysis of what it means to preserve Black Twitter https://19thnews.org/2023/05/black-twitter-archive-preserve-storytelling-community/

Good to see you here @craignewmark.bsky.social

Manhattan in repose. Random return of my nighttime photography habit.

Like that first day at a new school. I DON'T KNOW ANYONE HERE. Then i saw @adamserwer.bsky.social way down on the other end of the hall...
