It seems like the federal government wanted to commandeer the judge into doing their law enforcement work, which they cannot do as a constitutional matter. Refusing to assist the federal government is not the same as actively impeding law enforcement. This is highly suspect behavior from the feds.

Btw, patently obsequious gifts are common in Ru; they just happen to work on Trump too. I once had an interview w a court admin in Moscow and a provincial judge (dependent on the admin) was in the waiting room w me and he had brought a handwoven tapestry portrait of the admin as a gift!
