In the realm of adult onset dietary changes, I am*Distinctly* annoyed by the fact that my system has decided that the tannins in red wine and chocolate are the enemy. Like, come on!

Young people SHOULD “have it easier” than you did. I’m sorry you got the strap up hill both ways and paid your debts with pounds of flesh, but the reason we work for progress is to make growing up and growing old gentler, easier, kinder, freer. Struggle isn’t necessary in a healthy society.

When we fight we win

My new Genre Grapevine report focuses on tech bros trying to change intellectual property (IP) laws so they can keep stealing copyright works to train generative AI models. I also believe they want to rebrand how we see creativity itself to fit their needs. www.patreon.com/posts/127367...

Instead of watching something last night, I listened to ambient music and did a drawing/painting of Nellie, the protagonist I'm writing about. I built up several thin layers and dots of paint, so at one point she was a series of tiny dots.

I think a lot about how COVID-19 was sold as an "individual responsibility," an approach which got over a million people killed but that the culture still accepted. Following that P.R. success, they're eager to say every illness is your fault.

Screaming at these people works. They’re fundamentally wimps, we just have to actually DO the screaming instead of preemptively admitting defeat. I am talking about my fellow Americans, not the Democrats. We actually need to scream, gang, not just complain that Schumer isn’t.

Speaking of FUN, we just attended the book launch at @kewandwillow.bsky.social for Saint Death's Herald by the always-fabulous @csecooney.bsky.social Much merriment ensued!

I said I would start posting things that were interesting or fun, so here's a fun bathroom sign from the bookstore we were in this evening.

Trans rights are human rights.

If people really wanted to reduce opioid addiction and death, they would make cannabis federally legal, with medical prescriptions covered by insurance, and would make access to healthcare, mental healthcare, affordable housing and childcare the standard.

In a future where the Internet is completely useless due to GenAI and nobody trusts the Internet anymore, the people who hoarded books, tabletop games, craft kits, and art supplies will save the day.

In the past when everything was terrible, I would do one of those picture a day or good thing of the day challenges. There's more bad stuff going on now than in the past on many levels, but I need to at least have one motivating thing that is at least not bad every day.

Now the Trump regime has sent a letter to the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine in an apparent witch hunt about "bias." Trumpians want MAGA quackery in leading medical journals. NEJM is a 212 yr-old publication. Letters were sent to other journals last wk. They're threatening lawsuits.

Registries for pregnant women and children with autism, but no registry for guns?

I just got an email from FTD reminding me that tomorrow would have been my Grandma's 111th birthday. I think we're going to have to have a nice dessert to celebrate her on her eleventy-first birthday!

Anyway, I truly do not understand people who base their whole existence and identity on punching down. How do people not feel physically ill from being unkind?

In highschool I was once mean to a kid. Someone had told me that I was bullied because I was always nice, and that my luck would change if I were mean. I think I told the kid he looked like a middle aged accountant. He was embarrassed, and I felt terrible and apologized immediately.

Good morning apple.news/AUNLBXunBQtu...

In honor of Earth Day, I am pleading with everyone to not use generative AI and save about a bazillion gallons of water (Yes, even if you think that a cartoon illustration will align with today’s trending news topics)

Since Tuppence moved on, I have been bringing flowers in from the garden. I'm replacing them as they wilt. Today, a yellow tulip joined the arrangement. I miss her so much, and have filled her window perch with seed starters so it feels less empty.

The good news is that the constitution provides ways for Congress and the Judiciary to reign in a power-hungry president. The bad news is those people are all scared of him.

if you've been feeling overstimulated, low energy, or just off in your routines, this is your sign to stop chasing productivity & start protecting your energy

I'm working on a fun map this week for a murder mystery, set on an island off the coast of Maine. There's eels, which is great. But also, the map needs a handful of drawings of animals. This is the first time anyone's requested my blocky, black & white drawings. So I'm tickled. Here's the squirrel!

I've spent most of the day outside grief gardening. I planted lavender, phlox, pole beans, chives, cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, 2 tomato varieties, 2 corn varieties, and basil. I planted strawberries and hyacinths the other day as well.

We lost our beloved kitty Tuppence. I will love and miss her always. I've never in my life not had a pet at home. I'm shattered. 😥

In general confused by the messages "the tariffs will create jobs" and "we need AI to replace all the jobs" coming from the same people

Sending anyone from this country to a foreign gulag, particularly without a court hearing, should rightfully end a presidency. Full stop.

Going to keep saying: a society that wants to keep its basic functioning has to discourage lying. rewarding it instead is suicidal

COVID didn't "turn out fine." Over 1 million people died in just the US. People are still dying. 100s of thousands of people are still dealing with the effects of Long COVID. And the entire country lost its shit and is still unwell. Tariffs will not "turn out fine." Effects will be experienced.

Can we stop calling these atrocities "deportations." These people sold to El Salvadorian prisons were not deported. Deportation is a process that did not take place. They were rounded up and removed with no process. They were kidnapped, not deported.

I have a trans student who wrote to 2 individual Canadian unis to ask if they could apply late and quickly—both said yes and they got into both. They’re headed off to graduate school in the fall and I couldn’t be prouder or more relieved for their escape from the US.

Thread up and down, but this point in particular is key: all the relative luxury, safety, and functionality of modern society rests upon trust. We are social animals. We did not evolve to be Mighty Warriors or to be led by Great Men. We evolved to be neighbors. Neighborliness is our superpower.

NEW: ALA is going to court to stop the President’s attempts to illegally dismantle the Institute of Museum & Library Services. The President does not have the authority to destroy a federal agency. That's why we're taking action with our co-plaintiff @afscme.bsky.social. #ForOurLibraries (1/3)
