This won’t succeed but it is not normal. This is very dangerous. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

very easy to see what is happening. trump will run for a third term, he’ll try to bring the dispute to federal courts, where his election denying judges will rewrite the 22nd amendment to mean it only refers to “consecutive” terms.

I feel physically sick. I cannot believe we are going to live through this horror again. Those of you too young to remember the Iraq war have no idea how precisely the political establishment and legacy media are following the sane sickening playbook of lies that led to that global disaster again.

Some people get into journalism because they’re skeptical of power, and others do so because they’re impressed by it. Moments like this are clarifying with respect to who’s who.

No money for Medicaid or SNAP or museums or schools or sidewalks or gun violence prevention or art or libraries. Always money for war.

They’re simply reallocating those funds.

Every 5 years, the US wants to bomb a country to “save its women,” while stripping away rights from women across the US

Sen. John Thune is Majority Leader of a rubber-stamp factory.

#ResistanceUnited "Talent is evenly distributed across populations, but opportunity is not." A statement that succinctly sums up why DEI is essential. This NEJM article explains the negative impact on our healthcare system of dismantling DEI programs. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

He was humiliated last weekend. This weekend he bombed someone. My guess is there is a relationship between those two events.

here’s what the onion’s full page spot is running next to this morning

Five things to remember about war:

- war without congressional approval - masked thugs abducting and deporting people without due process - concentration camps on foreign soil - US military deployed against protesters - tariffs costing families thousands - gutting healthcare for millions … we’re only 152 days in

Crackdowns on civil liberties are always easier when a nation is at war.

“A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons."

it’s even more demoralizing when the history you’re repeating is history you were around for the first time

A president bombing a foreign country without congressional approval is ILLEGAL.

And just like that, the ‘No New Wars’ people are all-in on a new war. Proving yet again that they really believe in nothing other than what one man tells them to believe today. Which could be different tomorrow. The very definition of a cult.

AOC: “It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.”

If you were too young in 2003 here is what Bush told the American people: 1) The Iraq War won’t cost a lot of money 3) We won’t need a lot of troops 4) We’ll bring peace and freedom to Iraq 5) We’ll find WMDs 6) We’ll be welcomed as liberators 7) It will be easy 8) It won’t take long All lies.

That one person can drag us into a war without consulting or even notifying Congress, or our allies, or fully explaining to the American people why this is necessary, is absolutely bonkers. Reminder that Congress has the power to stop all of this. Where the hell are they? Hello?

NEWS: Donald Trump once said if Stephen Miller had it his way, there would only be 100 million people in America, all who look like Miller, according to the Wall Street Journal. This is the man Trump put in charge of immigration policy in our nation.

Younger people will be shocked to hear this, but way back when I grew up, anytime you saw a movie where some government official stopped someone on the street and demanded to see their identification papers, that was supposed to let you know they were the *bad* guys.

Republicans did this to Americans when Reagan was POTUS, too. After 40 years, we are still being negatively affected by the largest transfer of wealth from the middle class to the top earners. Your kid’s kids’ kids will pay for what Trump’s GOP accomplish over these next four years.

This is excellent and painfully necessary & says a lot more than its headline suggests - so it’s well worth reading it through. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/ice-believ...

BREAKING: In a unanimous decision, a federal court of appeals has ruled that Louisiana's law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in all public school classrooms is unconstitutional. We’ll keep saying it: Public schools are not Sunday schools.

If you want to make America healthy again, start with Universal health & UBI Masks in healthcare Clean air & water Affordable housing & food Guaranteed education Paid time off Affordable child care When we accept that caring for one another is essential for health & happiness, we all benefit

All these head-to-toe covered-up folks, roaming around with no badges and unmarked vehicles remind us that anyone with people they love and dreams to live for would absolutely fight against going to a second location. Nothing good happens there, away from the light. It’s pure madness to accept it.

I think it should be a bigger story that the Senate is preparing to confirm five Trump judicial nominees whose answers to questions about the 2020 election are exactly what you would say if you were a “Trump only lost because of voter fraud” conspiracy theorist

I just have to say, as a historian of the Reconstruction-era Klan, that masked paramilitaries are very bad and masked vigilantes are even worse and there are causal links between the two and none of this is good for democracy.

No American outlet would hesitate to describe them as pro-regime paramilitaries or an irregular militia and similar terms if this was happening anywhere else.

NEW: Yesterday the Trump admin indicated that it's planning to publish a new regulation, to go into effect immediately, that will create a system for them to impose civil penalties of millions to billions (not kidding) of dollars for specific immigration violations.

I can't believe the United States suffered a political assassination on Saturday, and all that's left of that story on Tuesday is calling out Mike Lee for being an unfeeling monster. The USA has a huge political violence problem, completely incompatible with a functioning democracy.

Sophia Gaynor was born with spinal muscular atrophy. The Gaynors' charity raised millions to help develop the drug Zolgensma, even as Sophia grew too old to receive the costly treatment. We told their story in February. On June 13, Sophia died at home with her parents at her side. She was 16.

This is an absolutely disgraceful act of corruption by both major parties. It will lead to an incredibly foreseeable set of disasters: best case, unlimited corruption and scamming, worst case a global financial crisis and inevitable federal bailout. Horrifying that 18 Democrats voted for it.

Religious nationalism is mutually exclusive to democracy. “I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.” — Susan B. Anthony

If the headline is quoting or paraphrasing a source, there are ways to make that clear. The editor chose none of that and instead cast as fact some very dubious conclusions. The main problem, though? Calling Boelter’s behavior anything short of hyperpolitical.

Love this❤️

(🧵) I’ve never—in 30 years in journalism—published a report like this: one that could genuinely bring hope. I spent the last 15 hours curating and labeling photos from hundreds of No Kings Day protests. It’s the largest archive of its kind and it has *lots* of Easter eggs (memes, an essay and more).

I assume the service members out there today realize that the tradeoff for the cost of the parade was probably a million things that could make their professional lives better and safer. What a shitty way to treat the people under your command

With the tragic assassination of a Minnesota Democratic leader, I’m going to underline this point again.

Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government. That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

This is a political assassination in a narrowly divided state legislature. It was intended to change the balance of power through violence and to end progressive legislating. It’s terrorism, pure and simple.
