BP expected to scrap renewables target in shift back to fossil fuels - Goal of increasing renewable energy generation 20-fold to be ditched, shareholders to be told this week #climatecrisis www.theguardian.com/business/202...

IPCC's working group II is meeting now. It focuses on adaptation. As the org tries to adapt to Trump.

If you want to understand global environmental negotiations, follow the stellar experts of the @enb.iisd.org team. As co-founder and executive editor, I am proud of what we have accomplished on the eve or our 33rd anniversary of "enabling transparency" at the UN.

Part of the reason why COP ends up in petrol states is that it's too big. Small states can't host 60k people. Heck, Belem is already crazy pricey during COP.

After 3 years of the UN climate conference occurring in petrostates, we need Brazil to do better. @climatehome.bsky.social has all you need to know about the push for oil in the Amazon: https://www.climatechangenews.com/2025/02/20/lulas-government-pushes-for-new-oil-drilling-in-the-amazon-cop-30/

Sadly, a sign of what's to come. WG3 assesses options to reduce emissions. Its work consistently shows climate action is affordable and possible.

I just submitted a book chapter that argued that recycling has co-opted governments & shifted responsibility to individuals. ...which is convenient for packaging industries & plastic producers

The question isn’t IF climate change is making extreme weather worse—it’s how much. Science can put a number on how many more homes flood, how much more rain a hurricane dumps, how much larger wildfires grow--and how much worse it will get if we don't act now. More by @frediotto.bsky.social & I:

My university just sent a fake phishing email, I guess to teach us about them. It was from a real uni account, had no spelling errors, asked us to login to a real uni page. But yeah, I'm a fool for clicking the link.

UK queue for connection of batteries to the grid by 2030 is now 61GW, whilst UK Clean Power Plan only calls for 27GW By 2035 the queue is 129GW whilst the 'need' is just 29GW Massively helpful for a key part of Clean Power Plan delivery. But...there will be losers www.thetimes.com/business-mon...

Word of the day is ‘cumber-world’ (14th century): a person or thing that encumbers the planet.

🚨How the Big 6 ad agencies all profit from greenwashing fossil fuel firms - and have also carefully greenwashed their own images to successfully escape criticism. Vital reporting from @desmog.bsky.social this week, as Ogilvy owner WPP is accused of climate and human rights violations.

Over 90% of countries have failed to submit new national climate action plans on deadline. Alarmingly, the 13 that did include just 5 Global North countries that are meant to be leading the charge on climate action according to the #ParisAgreement. READ 👇 climatenetwork.org/2025/02/11/o...

An unprecedented study analyzed data from 1991 to 2023 and found that each 0.1°C increase in average global air temperature led to 360 new climate disaster events and damages in Brazil amounting to R$ 5.6 billion ($970 million). The global warming process has accelerated over the current decade.

At long last - We have a starter pack for @enb.iisd.org. ENB shines a light on the confusing world of global environmental negotiations. Its strength is its people - super smart experts on climate, nature, plastics, land and more. go.bsky.app/VfZ25cx

🚨Earlier than expected breach of Paris Agreement threshold: Unlike some media articles about this yesterday, the two Nature reports on which those headlines are based are *free to access*. Here's one (Cannon):

185 countries, representing 83% of global emissions and almost 80% of the world’s economy, have missed the Paris Agreement deadline to submit new climate plans.

Good news - and shows how different global forums can work against one another.

This @cbcnews-rss.bsky.social piece is a gift that keeps giving in my activism class. It's a great launch for talking about how shifts in the sector shape actions on the ground

!! Reports of leaks at the troubled #SiteC dam in NE BC Awaiting better video but here's a leak from a penstock (dam intake pipe). It's -30C there but that's typical in Ft St John & dam should be able to withstand that. I'll relay some comments from locals in this thread. (Audio not mine) #bcpoli

🚨“Unless policy changes are made, B.C. could face an additional $2 billion in average yearly damages from building new homes in areas at high risk from climate-fueled wildfires and floods.” ⬇️ climateinstitute.ca/b-c-new-hous...

The Arctic is especially vulnerable to chemical pollution. We reviewed global, regional, and national regulations to see if they could help. We found fragmentation & gaps, but sometimes potential to put the Arctic front & center. pubs.rsc.org/en/content/a...

On whether to delete vs. renew decisions at #SC78, Belgium reminded parties of a graph, shared by #CITES Secretary-General Higuero, showing that the # of CITES decisions had dramatically increased over the past decade, while the # of Secretariat staff available to deal with them had flatlined.

I wonder if the timing of this report is strategic. Negotiations for a new global expert body on chemicals are in June. WHO would like to co-host the Secretariat.

24% of global deaths are linked to environmental factors—chemicals, plastic waste, and pollution are silently shaping the global health crisis. The WHO report highlights a stark reality: 13.7 million deaths in 2016 were attributed to modifiable environmental risks.
