For anyone interested in gender gaps in full-time university faculty, this analysis of Canada will be of interest. The bottom line is no surprise: they are still widely present universityaffairs.ca/features/wom...?

The USDA says egg prices could increase 41% this year. Meanwhile, the industry is more consolidated than ever and revenues are rising. Cal-Maine Foods controls a fifth of the egg market. Its revenue jumped 82% in a year—driven by an "increase in the net average selling price."

Excited to dig into @jennifer-clapp.bsky.social's new book, revealing how a few transnational corporations came to control the farm inputs sector, shaping tech, policy, and the social & ecological impacts of industrial ag. 🌱 A must-read! mitpress.mit.edu/978026255170... @ipes-food.org #FoodSystems

Together with @peternewell.bsky.social, I have a new paper out in RIPE. In this paper, we explore why and how the use of fossil hydrocarbons for non-energy purposes (as raw material for synthetics) changes how we should approach the climate crisis. 1/x www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

In 2021, the president of El Salvador Nayib Bukele announced that the country would adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. This was justified to promote financial inclusion, increasing remittance flows, and enhancing development. How did this turn out? 🧵 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Really enjoyed my conversation with MIT's TILclimate podcast to talk about the fossil energy in food systems with a focus on all the steps from farm to bite of a bag of corn chips! #foodsystems #fossilfuels #climatechange #agroecology tilclimate.simplecast.com/episodes/far...

Trumps attacks on reproductive health around the world (and health more generally, but make no mistake whose health his real target is - women) had me thinking about this piece @saraedavies.bsky.social & I wrote 5 (!) years ago academic.oup.com/isq/article/... Still holds

Congratulations to our @jennifer-clapp.bsky.social for publishing this important new book on the history of how a few giant firms came to dominate the farm sector today! If you care about how we got here, and the future of food, this is a must-read.

🚜 Fossil fuels have shaped farming for 200 years, from tractors to digital ag. In this #FuelToFork episode, @jennifer-clapp.bsky.social discusses the hidden costs of Big Ag's data-driven future. 🎧 tabledebates.org/fueltofork/e... Produced with @ipes-food.org & @tabledebates.bsky.social

New this week from the MIT Press 📚👇

Today is publication day! I explain how agricultural inputs - which weren't even widely traded market goods 200 years ago - have become giant industries dominated by just a handful of transnational firms today. mitpress.mit.edu/978026255170... Many thanks to those who helped me along the way!

The world produces more than enough #food to feed everyone. Yet it is shamefully misallocated. BigAg firms make more profit by exporting food for animal feed, biofuels, or ultra-processed foods, than selling it to poor people. 1/3 of all food is simply wasted. ipes-food.org/only-politic...

Deeply concerning on.ft.com/4hw03PH

EU plans to use the impending trade war to advance environmental goals by blocking imports of certain foodstuffs grown using banned pesticides "Early targets could include US crops such as soyabeans which are grown using pesticides EU farmers are not allowed to use" www.ft.com/content/e488...

Was a pleasure to speak with @tabledebates.bsky.social on the history of the industrialization of agriculture and the role of fossil fuels in that process for this #FueltoFork podcast episode 👇

My 2 cents: Hunger persists because we allow injustice to endure. If we are serious about ending it, we need bold political action, not just scientific breakthroughs. Only political will can end world hunger: Food isn’t scarce, but many people can’t access it theconversation.com/only-politic...

“Hunger persists because we allow injustice to endure. If we are serious about ending it, we need bold political action, not just scientific breakthroughs.”

Important piece by our @jennifer-clapp.bsky.social Only political will can end world #hunger & confront its major drivers : conflict, poverty, inequality, economic shocks & escalating climate change. There's enough food to go around. But a lack of political will to get it to the hungry.

Happy to share this piece I wrote (with input from @ipes-food.org colleagues) as a counter to the recent call for more technological 'moonshots' to end hunger. No amount of technology can ensure people are well fed - we need political will to tackle inequities theconversation.com/only-politic...

“If there’s no immigrant labour, there’s no milk, no cheese, no butter, no ice cream” #Foodsystems are also at the centre of Trump & co's racist dehumanisation & deportation agenda.

“If there’s no immigrant labour, there’s no milk, no cheese, no butter, no ice cream,” the dairy farmer said. “We’ll all have to go vegan.” US farmers wake up to the reality of the deportation agenda... If smaller farms go under, consolidation will inevitably follow... www.ft.com/content/e61e...

Project 2025 recommended (pp. 295-97) eliminating most agricultural subsidies, including those for crop insurance. And now this. Will destroying farmers make food prices go up or down?
