BREAKING: United Farm Workers and Bakersfield residents sue border patrol for unlawful practices. CBP’s January immigration raids terrorized communities and tore apart families. More at ufw.org/united-farm-...

Call for abstracts--Chicanx/Latinx Studies and the University. I'm co-editing a special issue of American Studies on the intersections between Chicanx/Latinx Studies and Critical University Studies. We'll be reviewing abstracts beginning April 15th! docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Therapeutic trip to the Cheech yesterday. The piece is by Yreina D. Cervantez, “Camino Largo.” I like how the artist turns this image of an elderly woman with a gun strapped across her body into a milagro.

From an HSI mtg today: The president of American Council of Education is reminding everyone that a Dear Colleague Letter is just that, an *intention* of what an agency intends to do.  IT IS NOT THE LAW.

Our top story: For the past three years, ENTRE has collected photos, home movies, and oral histories of Boca Chica from Valley residents, who’ve visited the free-access beach, little-known to tourists from the rest of the state, for generations to fish, barbecue, and even camp overnight.

Not even California is feeling so insulated any more. Definitely not in public higher education.

In other news, the peach blossoms are in bloom in Southern California #springiscoming

The position I'd like to see House and Senate Democrats take is pretty simple: We refuse to cooperate with Republicans on anything until they stop breaking the law and trashing the Constitution. We want Musk out, DOGE dissolved, and the Trump administration complying with federal court orders.

Grateful for a day of rain in So Cal 💙

One thing Democratic leadership could do right now is to name an alternate HHS secretary--someone to provide ongoing public updates and health information. And do it for other departments too. Start showing voters what a Democratic government would look like--press conferences, speeches, all of it.

We’re over here preparing for the worst with our undocu students, learning protocols about what to do if ICE comes on campus. Schools, churches, and hospitals used to be considered “sensitive” locations, but not any more.

It’s week 6 of the quarter, and today before class a student came up to me and asked me if the professor would holding office hours. Gentle reader, *I* am the professor 🥴

I wrote about the biggest rap performance of all time, Kendrick’s positioning of anti-Drake-ness as part of a larger pro-Blackness and justice for Serena Williams andscape.com/features/gen...

Kendrick Lamar’s Halftime show: Very demure. Very mindful. Very DEI. 10/10

Aubrey Plaza and Bad Bunny will convince me to buy Ritz crackers 😻

Great showing of faculty this afternoon at a workshop on how to support undocumented students. Community is everything rn #knowyourrights

i went to a community organizing event tonight for people to defend migrant rights in the IE. even though now i'm up later than i want to be writing tomorrow's lecture, i'm glad that i went. i needed to be in community with people who are strategizing and fighting back.

BREAKING: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says that Trump has agreed to pause tariffs on Mexico for one month.

“I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country. You are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you.” — Shakira during her #GRAMMYs  acceptance speech.

She deserved it not just because of her overall artistry but because the album is fantastic.

I’m glad Shakira dedicated her Grammy to the immigrant community. Even if it’s just symbolic, it was good to hear an acknowledgement of the community.

“Are you building or are you destroying?” - words from L, a college peer as we pushed for more equitable admissions at UCLA and other UC campuses and built coalitions.

Please join us tomorrow (Jan 29) at 4PM in SHH 109 at the Storrs campus of UConn for an info session about the Summer Collective Action for Social and Migrant Justice in the Borderlands program. #UConn

“Don’t fall into despair. When there’s a crisis like this or what’s ahead, take it one day at a time.” www.latimes.com/california/s...

Devastating situation at Sonoma State: "spending on instruction, as a share of total operating costs, dropped 11.5% between 2018 and 2023, while funding for campus police, management salaries and new facilities increased." www.pressdemocrat.com/article/news...

Ventura County strawberry workers are harvesting in heavy smoke from the Hughes Fire. We remind workers their employers have to provide them with respirator masks if the AQI exceeds 150. Stay safe! #WeFeedYou

750 (!) faculty across the University of California system signed this letter to UC President Michael Drake asking him to take concrete actions to support and protect students who are legally vulnerable.

SHARE WIDELY. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one. (1/3)

I don’t play video games, but Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow was one the best books I read last year. And tonight I was totally compelled by the movie “Free Guy.” I guess escapism and imagining other worlds is where it’s at rn.

It was not great to be at a high school history day competition this morning at 7am, but man those student projects were good! #thekidsarealright
