Very lucky to be spending two weeks in The Gambia working with @kartongbirdobs, continuing our collaboration on blood parasite infections in resident birds. Amazing team, fantastic birds including this Senegal Coucal. Lots of fun science to come!

Applications are now open - contact the email address at the bottom of the poster for more details! Closing date 10th March, if not already a #WIMANET member you will need to join in order to attend

Hey #WildlifeDisease & #conservation folk, please check out our survey on attitudes to parasite conservation. Are parasites important for biodiversity, would you remove them to protect host welfare, or something more nuanced? We want to hear all views to improve guidance for practitioners πŸͺ±πŸ§ͺ🌍🧡1/n

New paper! Out now in #Parasitology, open access: doi.org/10.1017/S003... Paper led by former MBio student Ellie Lebeau - congratulations Ellie! #ornithology #wildlifemalaria

New paper!! First paper from @lincolnswans.bsky.social validating data from our amazing Lincoln Swan Project community scientists available open access here: rdcu.be/d63kG. Great also to have five undergraduate students as co-authors - all worked with the swans for projects or summer internships 😊

Are you a PhD student hoping to attend an ecological conference or training that could boost your research? Apply for a training and travel grant today.Β  Applications for round 1 close on 24 January at 11:59 pm (GMT).Β  Find out more about the grant and eligibility criteria:

Today I got some stellar training on bacterial culture 101 by Emily Stevens at Keele Uni, and managed to catch up with @jennycdunn.bsky.social at the same time! Was pretty impressed by Keele and it's researchers :)

Where are all the field studies? This ⬇️ important but rather depressing paper describes how conducting, & crucially initiating, field studies is becoming harder & rarer. A short 🧡 (and a call for more fieldwork) www.cell.com/trends/ecolo...

From #WIMANET We have an early Christmas present for you! In February, the WG1 @luzglongoria @ChakarovNayden @Ricardo_J_Lopes are organising an online course about Unix and Shell scripting for wildlife malaria studies! save the date

Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, has laid an egg, this time with a new partner. She is a Laysan albatross thought to be around 74 years old. Ringed in 1956!!!! 🌍πŸ§ͺπŸ¦‘ 🦀🐧 #seabird #ornithology Lovely story from @mongabay.bsky.social news.mongabay.com/short-articl...

Alfonso Marzal announces the next #WIMANET organised Conference on Malaria and other Blood Parasites of Wildlife, in Badajoz, Spain, in early spring 2026. See you there!!

With my lab group currently split across three countries πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ πŸ‡±πŸ‡Ή πŸ‡¨πŸ‡±, and four cities (!) it’s great for three of us to be in the same place at the same time here in Colombia!

Really looking forward to the next plenary - Edward Netherlands on the VP biology of blood parasites in amphibians 🐸 and reptiles 🐍

Proud supervisor moment! Misa Shimizu presenting the poster from her first paper :) #WIMANET

Great to hear that #WIMANET summer school training is already being applied to research! Jessica Jimenez-Penuela telling us about effects of malaria infection and fungicides on bird health

Alexandra Corduneanu tells us about the importance of bats πŸ¦‡ in disease ecology #WIMAMET

x.com/wimanetscien... Our next challenge is to get #WIMANET on Bluesky!

And the conference begins!!

Vaidas Palinauskas gives us an introduction to haemoparasite ID before we get let loose on the slides we collected during fieldwork #WIMANET

Bird ringing demonstration at the pre-conference workshop in Rio Claro #WIMANET

Awful photo, but excited to arrive in Medellin ahead of the wildlife malaria conference next week #WIMANET But first, sleep - 4am GMT was a long time ago!

Wonderful paper uses high-resolution tracking data to show barn swallows & house martins infected with blood parasites have smaller foraging ranges in lower-quality habitat than uninfected birds. Hopefully more such papers on movement-parasitism associations to come! www.nature.com/articles/s42...

New #bird #bloodparasite paper in #Parasitology!! Really nice collaboration - newly described parasite Haemoproteus bobricklefsii n. sp. very common in UK dunnocks, occasional in Sweden and US, absent in Lithuania. Morphological and phylogenetic descriptions. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Need photos of invertebrates for education/conservation purposes? Check out www.flickr.com/photos/runne... for 9,000 or so free to use images. Mostly UK, but also a bit from further afield, and a bird/plant/mammal sneaks through occasionally.

#peerreview question. We recently had reviewer comments embedded in a manuscript rather than as list of points, so we replied in kind. Technical checkers at journal insisting we copy comments and responses into a separate document (no quick way to do this) - anyone else has this?

Manuscript accepted in Parasitology!! "The prevalence and immune response to coinfection by avian haemosporidians in wild Eurasian blackbirds Turdus merula" Always wonderful to see student projects published, and huge congratulations to first author, Ellie Lebeau 😊 πŸ§ͺ

I am happy to share our new bat Plasmodium paper. Thank you to all authors! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Great discussions this morning about how we can analyse host-parasite communities in wildlife malaria studies in our first WIMANET workshop. This afternoon, vectors! #WildlifeMalaria #WIMANET cost.eu/actions/CA22...
