600,000 people got on trains, buses to London to protest against the genocide in Palestine today & it wasn’t even on the news. Such is the power of money, it controls everything & everybody, it’s cost, life itself. Therein the answer, get rid of money in favour of equality & life

The best church on today's bike ride was Geslingthorpe. A memorial to Captain Oates (who also features on the village sign), Oxeye Daisies, a harvestman & a pseudoscorpion for @vannabartlett.bsky.social and a Cramp Ball Weevil.

Cramp Ball Weevil (aka Scarce Fungus Weevil), Platyrhinus resinosus. Pleased to not only see my first one of the year, but to be able to take a photo with my phone as it sat on top of a gravestone in a churchyard. www.naturespot.org/species/scar... #beetles

More than usual Wool-carder Bees in the garden this year. It may be difficult to recognise individuals with so many. Here’s one of the males taking a break. #bees #WildlifeGardening #ento #UKwildlife

Anglian Water pleads guilty, fined £1.42m for contaminating water supply. No exec fined. AW already has 128 criminal convictions. Allowed to operate, fleece customers, dump sewage, neglect investment, pay dividends and exec bonuses. End the farce. Must remove profit motive. Nationalise.

Pillarbox at Harleston, Suffolk. Seen on today's bike ride.

Morning all. There’s a blackbird that often comes and sits outside the window where I work. Sometimes called the Ouzel Cock, the Woofell, the Merle or the Amsel. But I like to call him Gerald. Have a lovely weekend. xx #ukbirding 🪶

Rather chuffed to announce that @vc40ladybirds.bsky.social & I have today had our guide to the Micro Ladybirds of Britain and Ireland published. Available from all good bookshops as they say, including here: www.field-studies-council.org/shop/publica...

Heat in the sky in the cool of the day, and a bundle of purple mountains. Views west to the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Skye, and east to the Torridons.

✍️ Letter to Keir Starmer Once strangers at university, now divided by politics – one writer asks Keir Starmer: how did you become complicit in Gaza’s suffering? By Steve Pottinger @bigstevepoet.bsky.social

“Instead of more appeasement to the right wing, this Government should focus on building an effective and humane immigration system, including a fair and effective asylum process that’s capable of making the right decision quickly.” www.freedomfromtorture.org/news-and-sto...

The gorgeous Common Asparagus Beetle, Crioceris asparagi, at the allotment. I used to think of them as pests but nowadays we live together in harmony. I let them lay their eggs on a sacrificial plant and then harvest the rest of my crop. The arrangement suits us both. #beetles #allotments

www.aljazeera.com/opinions/202... May 15, 1948, my grandfather Saeed was just six years old when Zionist militias attacked his village in Beersheba, forcing his family to flee. His mother carried him as they escaped the horror of explosions and shelling. The nearest refuge was Gaza City. Unending

I also discuss the bizarre and disturbing association between the Starmer government and former special advisers to Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. I vaguely remember being told something about "Change". But this continuity is beyond our worst nightmares. Not just Tory policies, but actual Tories.

This is a law that should have been on the books for years It has no chance of becoming law this time either, because Keir Starmer is a coward and refuses point blank to do what is required to tackle the climate emergency www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

You don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone… “since 2020 we've found a decline in blackbirds of approximately 40% in Greater London," said Dr Folly www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Beaked Hawk’s-beard, Crepis vesicaria, is flowering well in Norwich at the moment. I love this flower and so does the Catsear Mining Bee, Andrena humilis. www.jeremybartlett.co.uk/2024/05/15/b... #wildflowerhour #bees #flowers

My first visit to Grapes Hill Community Garden in Norwich for several years. The garden is now 14 years old and maturing well. I led the initial planting of the garden in 2011, another droughty year, when we spent the summer watering in the new plants.

Today's insect of the day was the gorgeous Crimson Tansy Aphid, Uroleucon tanaceti, in Wensum Park in Norwich. (Found recently by @norwichbirder.bsky.social.) www.influentialpoints.com/Gallery/Urol...
